Chapter 2
Jake
I picked up an order off of the counter, checking the table number before walking over to that table. Sitting there as a young man and a little boy who looked like he was about two. And I couldn't help but notice that the young man looked a bit familiar.
"Here is your cappuccino and chocolate chip cookie," I said, setting them both on the table.
"No!" the little boy said. "I wanted a brownie! Daddy, I wanted a brownie! No cookie!"
"What?" his dad said. "Newt, you told me chocolate chip cookie. You even told the person at the counter you wanted a cookie."
"Brownie!" Newt said.
His dad sighed. "I only brought enough money for you to get one thing. I can't get you a brownie."
"I. Want. Brownie."
"I can't get you a brownie."
"I can get him one and pay for it," I said. "I get an employee's discount anyway."
"No, I can't ask for you to do that," he said.
"I. Want. BROWNIE!" Newt said, sounding like he was very close to screaming at the top of his lungs.
"Really, I don't mind," I said.
"No, I really couldn't l--"
"I'm doing it," I said before heading back to the counter and paying for a brownie with my employee's discount. I then walked back to the table and gave Newt the brownie. "Here you go."
"Yay, now I have a cookie and a brownie," Newt said.
"Newt!" his dad said.
"What?"
"You said you didn't want a cookie."
"I never said that."
His dad sighed and looked at me. "I am so sorry about him. He's a little brat."
"Daddy!"
"You are, Newt." That, however, got Newt's bottom lip to start quivering. "No no, I didn't mean it. Please don't cry."
"You're so mean to me...." Newt said.
"I'm sorry, Newt. Look, when we get home, I'll....Let you play my phone."
"Okay!"
His dad sighed then looked at me. "Hey....Weren't you in one of my classes at the college?" he asked.
"That's why you look familiar," I said. "I could have sworn I've seen you before. You don't go there anymore?"
He shook his head. "No, I had to withdraw because Newt's mom decided to leave him with me without a warning, which means I'd have to pay for daycare when I'm at school and work. I'm Taylor, by the way."
"I'm Jake," I said.
"I'm sorry about Newt making you buy another brownie," Taylor said. "He's just a drama queen and a brat."
"King," Newt corrected, taking a bite out of the cookie that he 'didn't want'.
"Sorry, drama king," Taylor said. He looked at me again. "But thanks for getting him the brownie before he started screaming."
