The branches scratched me as I flew past them. I was trying to leave as much of my scent in the wood as possible. I felt the blackberry bushes scrape against my ankles and I rejoiced that I was bleeding. I knew that Jacob and Edward could find me easier that way. I ran, faster than I ever had before. For once I didn't trip, I didn't falter. I was on the path west towards the freeway. I could make it. I didn't come this far. I didn't risk everything to be taken down this way. Riley was not going to get me and he was not going to get Ryland. I had finally gotten my life together. I had Edward, I had my father, I had Jacob and I had Ryland. I had found love, a love that didn't ask for anything from me; a love that had brought me back to life. I couldn't lose that now. I refused to let this be the end of me.

I could see a clearing ahead and I slowed to find an opening to the road. I made my way half way across the field when I heard him behind me.

"Don't do this Bella. You'll regret it. Stop now and no one gets hurt," he shouted. I wasn't going to fall for that. I was too close to freedom I wasn't going to let him see me frighten now. I wasn't backing down from this. I needed to keep going.

"Fuck you, Riley," I shouted. I could sense that he had stopped running and I kept going; running almost to the edge of the meadow. The sound echoed in the trees, shaking the branches. They say it sounds like fireworks. It doesn't, it's a canon in your ears, a scream of wind and steel through air. It's the sound of thousands of perfect moment, slowed before your eyes.

I ducked down at the sound, fell into the damp earth. The bracken and moss held me down. I laid there for a moment, waiting for the pain—a low throbbing in my hands and knees from my fall, but no sharp pain from the bullet. I clung to Ryland and checked his body over. He seemed to be fine, albeit very frightened. I held Ryland to my chest. Every step thundered in my ears, the twigs beneath his feet and the whistle of the blue jay in the trees.

Riley sauntered over to me, a coy smirk on his face. "Did I scare you darling? My apologies; I just needed you to stop running."
