Jay was restless. Though he couldn't put his finger on it something just didn't feel right. The last time he talked to Elle was three hours ago when they had a heated argument which left her hanging up on him. He'd tried texting her several times to no avail.
"Brat," he muttered. He tried calling her cell again, but this time it went straight to voicemail.
Something wasn't right, he was certain of it. No matter how mad she got at him, Elle never turned off her phone and she had a charger in her car so it never died.
"Stubborn ass woman," he mumbled as he pulled his coat and boots out of the closet. As he sat and pulled on his boots his dog, Dixie, sat tilting her head in confusion at him. He stood, opening the front door, and said, "Come on, girl. Let's go find her."
The first place he headed was her house. Although her car was not in the drive he got out, leaving his truck running, and knocked on the door - once, twice. When there was no answer, he used his spare key to let himself in. Her little dog, Sophie, met him at the door wagging her tail.
"Hey baby, where's mommy?" He asked her lovingly as he scratched her ears. He went through the house looking for any sign she had been home. Everything was exactly as it had been when they had left last night. He headed back toward the front door, telling Sophie to go lay down, and locked the door behind him.
Climbing back into his truck he meets Dixie's sad gaze with, "Well, time for plan B," and he pulls out of the driveway.
At the stop sign he sits for a minute, going through their conversation and trying to remember where she was the last time they talked.
An angry honk from the car behind him pulls him from his thoughts and he makes a left onto Highway 41, trying to think of where she could be.
