Slipping back into consciousness, Elle was cold and confused. She racked her brain trying to remember what exactly had happened. She remembered the fight with Jay on the phone, but after that it all jumbled together into a mix of rain, cold, and black. She had wrecked her car, she knew that much because she was still laying on her side.

"Fuck," she mumbled. She tried to shift her weight off her left arm, and pain shot through her entire body.

"Fuck!" She repeated. She slowly turned her head, first right then left. No sign of her phone anywhere. "Just my luck," she thinks.

She had been driving back from a beach wedding that she photographed and decided to take the back roads instead of the interstate. The night was beautiful whenever she pulled off Amelia Island but about an hour into the drive the rain started to fall. Within 15 minutes she could barely see the road in front of her and the wind made controlling the car a difficult conquest.

She replayed the argument with Jay in her mind. He had just told her that Aly was pregnant and that they were going to get married. She called him out, saying he was only marrying her for the baby and that he was just trying to replace his other child.

"You have no fucking idea what you're talking about," he'd yelled at her. "You're delusional if you thought that there was ever anything more than just sex between us anymore!"

That is when she hung up on him, tears streaming down her face as hard as the rain pelting her windshield in the black of night. What started as a slow, steady rain quickly turned into a torrential downpour within minutes.

She had planned to pull off into the next store she came to, but before she knew what was happening she was spinning and careening. And then all was black.
