As Jay drove he replayed their fight over and over in his head. He should've never yelled at her, he knew that; but she had struck a nerve whenever she saw right through him and called him out on his marriage proposal to Aly. To make matters worse he said the words he'd sworn never to say to her - that there was never anything more than six between them - and it hurt him as much as it had her.
A flash of lightening lit up the cab of his S-10 pickup and he could see Dixie sitting with her paws on the dash and her head on her paws, looking out the window. Jay reaches over and scratches her on her back. Dixie looks at him and whimpers, then looks out the window again.
"We will find her, girl. Don't worry."
All of a sudden, Dixie straightens and stiffens in the seat, focused on something ahead in the road. She begins a low, rumbling growl and Jay slows the truck to a stop. Reflecting in his headlights was Elle's monogram sticker on her back window. Telling Dixie to stay, he jumps out of the truck and runs to her car.
Her Nissan Altima lay on its driver side, front end down in the ditch. As he approached the car he could see that the water in the ditch had already risen as high as the windshield; the way it was raining it would be in the car in no time if it hadn't already started.
"Elle! Elle can you hear me?" Jay calls out, but receives no answer. He reminds himself to remain calm as he is approaching the vehicle. He turned on the flashlight on his phone and shined it through the windows, looking for some sign of movement inside.
Elle was still seat-belted into the driver seat, but as far as he could tell she was not moving. He called 911 and gave them their location, then began carefully working to get her out of the car.
