We had been sitting under that tree for hours talking about trivial little things that I can hardly remember, I was so caught up in conversation with him that I didn't notice that the sun was going down.

"Oh shit man." Frank said as he looked down at his phone. "Its actually like 7 o'clock."

He frowned slightly as he tucked his phone back into his pocket.

"Really its that late?" I said, standing up.

"I guess so." He sighed and put his arms out. "Help me up."

I giggled at him and rolled my eyes.

"You have two legs, get up by yourself."

"No I don't. I broke them. Help me up"

I laughed and pulled him to his feet.

"There, are you happy now?" I nudged him playfully as we started walking down the path that would eventually lead us back to the main part of town.

He smiled and nodded. We walked in comfortable silence down the path, every now and then we would bump into each other or exchange looks, but neither of us said anything until we got back to the cemetery and hopped the fence.

"Hey Gerard?" Frank said as we walked past the cemetery gate.

"Yes?" I answered, he put his hands in his pockets and looked down at his feet.

"Why do you think people like to bully other people? Like, I get the part that they're just trying to make themselves feel better. But, why?"

I looked over at him, his head was still hanging and he was fiddling around with something in his pocket.

"I don't know." I sighed and closed my eyes.

I really never understood the appeal in putting others down in order to make yourself feel better. Then again, some people just do it because they're soulless fucking assholes who want to make other peoples lives a living hell.

My train of thought was interrupted by the sound of a lighter flickering. I opened my eyes to see him lighting a cigarette and sticking it between his teeth.

"Did I tell you why I had to switch schools in the middle of the fucking school year?" he asked, taking the cigarette out of his mouth and holding it between his fingers.

I took the cigarette out from his hand and took a quick puff.

"No, I don't think you did" I said as I passed the cancer stick back to him.

He laughed and shook his head.

"Well at my old school I was best friends with this kid named Bob. One day I decided to tell him something that I had never told anyone else in my entire life. He swore he wouldn't tell anyone else and that I could trust him."

He paused and looked down before taking a drag of his cigarette and continuing his story.

"He lied. He told everyone. I got bullied for that shit everyday. I couldn't walk down the hall without someone saying something to me about it. I lost all my friends, and no one would talk to me unless they were just trying to piss me off. One day I walked into homeroom and some kid tripped me. I was in a really shitty mood that day, so I punched him in the jaw. I got expelled and my mom made us move and made me switch schools and all that bullshit."

He looked up at me and handed me the cigarette.

"Oh wow, shit Frankie. I'm sorry" I took a puff of the cigarette and handed it back to him.

Now I was curious.

"If you don't mind me asking, what did you tell that Bob guy anyway." I asked.

He took a deep breath and looked into my eyes.

"If I tell you, you have to promise you will never tell anyone else. And if you do tell anyone, I will actually rip your dick off and slap you with it."

I laughed "Wow okay, violent"

He smiled at me. "I know I just met you like today, but I trust you, okay? You have to promise me that you will NOT tell anyone."

"Okay, I promise"

He stopped walking and shoved his hands in his pockets. His breathing was shaky and I couldn't really tell, but I'm about 90% sure his hands were trembling.

"Okay. I-I'm gay."

I looked down at him and smiled as I let one singular word exit my mouth.

"Same."
