The next morning I got dressed and prepped myself for facing Scarlett. After eating breakfast with Ruby, I slowly walked to my car, trying to think of the words I was going to say.
On the drive to her office building, I came to the realization that Scarlett scared the absolute mess out of me. And in all honesty, I was terrified to confront her about breaking the contract.
Walking up to the front desk I tried to just focus on the sound of my heels clicking across the waxed floor, pulling the edges of my mouth to a tight smile. As long as I seem non-chalant, this won't feel like I'm about to quit my job- which I was. And all for a boy who I just met two months ago.
"Mrs. O'Dair, Rayne Stephanie is here to see you," the receptionist said through the cracked door. I could faintly smell Scarlett's Chanel No. 9 from here.
And close enough to hear a chipped, "Alright send her in!"
I walked into her office, heel to toe, and gave her my practiced tight lipped smile.
"Morning, Ms. Stephanie," Scarlett purred, typing a quick few clicks into her keyboard. "And how's everything in paradise?"
I resisted the urge to sit down, hoping this would only take a couple of moments. "That's what I needed to talk to you about. Everything is going so great with Nick and I that"- I hurried and rushed out the next part- "Iwashopingwecouldcancelthecontract."
Scarlett just raised her mascared eyes to me, one eyebrow arching higher than the other. "And why, may I ask?" was all she said.
I knotted my fingers together in front of my stomach, trying to find anywhere else in the room to rest my gaze than on hers. "Because... Nick and I actually really like each other and he thought it just wouldn't be a great idea if we continued on with the contract."
The silence that followed was numbing, the only thing I could hear was Scarlett's red-glazed nails tapping slowly on her mahogany desk, pinky, ring, middle, pointer, thumb, then it would start again.
She then sat up straighter and rested her arms in front of her. "Here's the thing," she started and my heart sank because I knew what words would follow. "the contract is for the next six months, to eradicate it would be very tedious and I honestly am too busy. And also if you and Nick break up, I would have no way to get you two back together if I didn't have legal issues involved." She gave me a smirk.
But then she surprisingly added, "I'm sorry, Rayne, really. But you only have four more months and then it will be over." I saw the most sincerity in her eyes as I nodded and turned to leave, but she stopped me with one last thing.
"I hope you rocked your Cosmo interview, all I could do was set you up, I can't guarantee the job." She winked and swiveled around in her chair to answer the ringing phone.
Okay, that's the last of the spam. I'll update within the next week. Thanks everyone for reading!
