I woke up the next morning on Nick's couch where we had fallen asleep next to each other watch another musical. His arm draped loosely around my shoulders and me tightly curled into his side.
There was a buzzing in my pocket that had been going on for the past five minutes, bringing me back from my dreamless sleep. With my eyes still closed I pulled my phone out and pressed it to my ear, mumbling a groggy, "Hello?"
"Hi, is this Rayne Stephanie?" a tight pitched female voice asked from the line.
I rubbed my eye with heel of my hand, sitting up straighter on the couch. "Yes, who is this?"
"I'm Maggie from Cosmo fashion magazine," she said. "And I was just calling to get back to you about an interview at our office."
I barely could hear the words filtering through my phone because my blood had turned to electricity. Fashion, Cosmo, interview. I never scheduled an appointment with them... But they had my full name, so that had to have been divine intervention, right?
Play it cool. "Oh, yes, the interview," I spoke, my voice more clear and alert.
"We had originally planned for it to be next week but an unexpected event has occured and I'm sorry to say that we are going to have to reschedule."
My heart dropped a bit to my stomach.
"But," she continued. "we have an opening an hour from now if you would want to take the slot?"
"Yes!" I said, louder than I intended. "Yes, that would actually be perfect."
"Alright, Ms. Stephanie, we will see you then." Then the line went dull.
I looked around, did this really just happen?
Nick's arm was still draped around me and he was sleeping peacefully, his chest slowly falling and rising.
I went shopping! My bags were in the car.
I slipped my shoes on and silently closed the door to his apartment to run down to my car and grab all the bags that I could. There was no time for me to drive across the city and get ready then come all the way back to the office. I had to hurry.
When I walked back into the apartment I hurried to his bathroom to throw my clothes off. Okay, okay. Good thing I had bought an outfit.
I slipped on a loose chevron sweater, leather jacket and a golden spiked necklace that had been on sale. I ripped open the shoe box shoved my feet into my Steve Madden platforms.
I ran my face underneath the faucet, rubbing off yesterday's makeup and quickly applied what I had in my purse. Guiltily, I dug through Nick's cabinet and found an un opened tooth brush and promised myself I would pay him back later. With my hair in a high messied bun, I silently slipped out of his apartment.
