Jillian woke up and she couldn't see a thing. She groaned as she tried to lean forward and strain her eyes. As she did so, she heard several voices hushing each other.
Something was removed from her face and she could see a candle in the center of a nearby table.
"Good morning, Jillian Hoversund." Said a man sitting across from Jillian.
"How--" Jillian started.
"Do I know your name?" The man interrupted. "Easy. The Innkeeper's boy. Everyone knows who Jillian Hoversund is and we were told to find you before the Rangers do."
Jillian was still confused at what he was saying, so she showed it in her facial expression.
"What are you so confused about? You should know that you're the Golden Ranger." The man said.
Jillian's eyes went wide. "What?" She whispered.
"You didn't know that? I never met a victim that didn't know who they were." The man paused to come up with an explanation. "You remember going to a contest, or pageant, or whatever it was?" He asked.
Jillian nodded.
"Good. That Golden Novel that was promised to you led to you being the Golden Ranger, which is supposed to be the ultimate Ranger, who ends up being the Commandant's right hand man, or woman. That's what makes the novel golden. You are said to be the Golden Ranger, Jillian. And Felicity sent us to take care of you before the Rangers get to you first."
"What do you mean 'take care of me'?" Jillian asked. Keep him talking. She thought. Every villain must have to fall victim to the monologue.
"What I mean is, Felicity sent us to try and kill you. I doubt she would tell your mother that her precious baby was killed while in her favorite book series." The man answered.
He directed his men to take hold of her and she patiently waited for the men to grab her arms and lift her to her feet.
When she was being forced to stand, she let her body go limp and noticed that the men gave considerable effort to lift her.
She gave the man across from her a friendly smile, then stepped on the feet of both the men beside her. The immediately began to nurse their feet. Bad idea. Thought Jillian. She slammed her elbows into the nape of their necks and they lay still.
While that was happening, the man who was sitting across from her was directing others to attack. Now that she was done with the first two men, they rushed over to her, arms out wide to grab her by the shoulders.
Jillian heaved her shirt up and swung her leg up in a high kick towards the man's chin. It hit the jaw with a loud crack! and Jillian turned to the other man, who was closer than before and she swept her leg under him and he fell to the ground and didn't get back up.
"You stupid bitch! You did that on purpose!" The last man said.
Jillian smiled. "Maybe, maybe not." She said. She held up her hands as if she was surrendering. "Look at what I am sure I did, though."
The man gritted his teeth and rushed at her. "You stupid little--"
"Don't move a muscle."
