But nothing ever turned out good, not for Night.
I was sleepily trying to find a hairtie to tie my hair up when I heard alarms ring out throughout the base. I grabbed the last hairtie that wasn't in my duffel bag before checking I'd had everything. All the rooms had been stripped down, with our belongings that couldn't be brought to the secure base put in a big box and pushed in to the ground, sealed tightly shut. I grabbed my bag, affirming that I had everything. I raced down the hallway, about to go through the teleporter when Soldier 76 grabbed my arm.
"I need you to stay here and come with Ana and I to speak with the politicians. We're bringing Genji too."
I nodded, giving my bag to Mei to dump on my bed before following Soldier 76. The alarms turned off after mostly everyone had left. Mercy was standing worriedly at the door, in her Valkyrie suit and her staff in her hands. Ana and Soldier 76 stayed inside, sending Genji and I to go with Mercy. I saw a helicopter land, with politicians coming out from governments of the USA, UK, China, Australia, Russia etc. Volskaya met our eyes, warning us not to say anything about our alliance. I was tense, fiddling my hands, struggling to not unsheathe my claws. Then someone stepped out from the helicopter that proved my suspicions right. It was Reaper. He stayed with the helicopter, his arms folded mockingly staring at me. I death-stared him down, before I was brought back to where I was by Mercy speaking.
"Greetings! Why have you come here?" She asked.
"We have heard that Overwatch is in operation now, we would like to come in." One of them said.
"You'll only find a few stragglers here. Everyone left when you disbanded Overwatch all those years ago." I could sense passive-aggressiveness in Mercy's voice.
"Wait." I turned around with Mercy and Genji to see what the matter was.
"Her." An American politician pointed at me. "She's new. She wasn't here when you were first called together."
"'She' has a name." I snapped.
"Night was in need of us. You can now save your questions for later." Mercy stiffly turned around, leading the numerous politicians inside.
"Hello." Ana's voice echoed around the empty room as I walked away with Genji.
"Where are they going?"
"They have training to do. Where else? They need to be strong and independent." I could feel Ana's cold gaze staring them down.
Genji and I situated ourselves on the inside-balcony, both of us on opposite side of the room and looking down at what was going on. I kept an eye for what Reaper was doing, I had to know what he was doing here. My tail flicked impatiently but I knew that I couldn't do anything right then and there.
"We have gotten gist that the Overwatch Initiative has restarted. Are those rumours true?" One politician asked.
"We cannot deny nor confirm those rumours." Ana replied.
"That means yes." The UK politican whispered.
"May we send a search team in one hour, to make sure that you are true to your word?"
Ana nodded, her eye showing no emotion.
The politicians walked outside, waiting there as Reaper and a few disguised men (from Talon I assumed) got their equipment ready. I leaped down to Ana and Soldier 76.
"Reaper is here, him and a few troops from Talon are going to be searching this area." I murmured.
"Since when did they suddenly work for Talon?" Soldier 76 muttered.
"I think it was Reaper who started the rumours. I can isolate him and question him thoroughly but it's been a nagging suspicion." I offered.
"We'll have to take down the teleporter." Ana realised.
"I can go to Symmetra and tell her to take down the teleport." Genji said.
"Bring Symmetra back here, we'll need her to make another." I reminded him before he jumped away.
Symmetra came back, with Genji. "I've taken down the teleporter." She announced, dusting her hands off.
"That's good, we have fifteen minutes left." Mercy came back, checking the clock and readying her staff.
I clawed my way up the wall, looking out a window as I overheard their conversation.
"...it's true that they're plotting against the government, we can take them out if you want." Reaper was manipulating their minds, trying to get them to agree with what he wanted.
They all nodded. "Go ahead."
"Guys, they're attacking!" I leaped down. "Reaper is manipulating them to do whatever he wants!"
"10 minutes before they attack." Ana loaded her sniper gun.
Symmetra started setting six turrets around the main entranceway before running to Soldier 76 who would protect her. Ana walked up the stairs, heading to the balcony where she could oversee everything. Mercy went with her, her staff ready to heal or power up. I clawed my way up above the entrance way, clinging on with my tail waving and ready to jump down on whoever came through the entrance. Genji stood with Soldier 76, a bit behind him whilst Symmetra got ready to summon shields up.
The clock agonizingly ticked forward, almost at the time. I could hear Reaper ordering his troops to get in to position. They were all going to come, three rows with multiple troops. It seemed that Reaper planned for this. My ear twitched. My tail waved. My claws dug in to the metal wall. I was ready. I could see the clock out of the corner of my eye, it was on it's last minute. The hand was slowly ticking towards the time. In 5, 4, 3... I counted in my head. 2... I was holding my breath. The moment the clock struck 12 the doors got ripped open, making a screeching noise.
I hope you liked this chapter! I have to go now, my cat wants a cuddle.
