"I'm fine, I swear."
"Everything's good."
"I'm okay."
The words just slide out anytime people ask her. But in truth, quiet teen Patience Phillips is finally tired of lying....to herself, at least. Tired of the constant abuse, sick of the fear, disgu...
Realization of what happened hit me hard. Too hard. It might as well have been a lead wall that fell atop me.
I lost my cool, attempted to murder a punching bag, then had to be all but dragged away to keep from inflicting more damage.
You see what Jack does to me!
Dean and I both said nothing to each other. He just stood there gripping my wrists tightly, while I stayed just as motionless, breathing like a maniac. Not that that was the least bit easy. The air around us felt solid and heavy. The only way anyone would be able to loosen this up was if they sliced through it with a butcher knife.
He knew something was wrong. Like I've said before, he's not stupid. A striking pair of blue eyes were already intently searching my own for clues. I let myself get sucked into them for one moment. The icy orbs held all sorts of emotion. From curiosity and confusion, to anger, frustration, and concern.
I ripped away from him and tried to distract myself by, fiddling with a strand of my hair and staring at whatever my eyes landed on.
Anything to keep from making eye contact again.
"Wha-" Dean started cautiously. Please, don't ask why I went She-hulk on a defenseless punching bag. Instead of continuing, he simply let out a huff. Then started up again. "Those were good punches. I feel bad for the sap that pisses you off. Didn't know you had it in you Snips" he said. After a few moments of my silences he spoke again. "Looks like you're a quick learner," he paused, "and a bit of a hot head".
I really didn't want to respond to that. Actually, about the only thing I want to do right now is go hide under the nearest rock until I hit 30.
He must have decided to leave it alone because the next thing he did was pat me on the back. Not a "pat, or even a "it's okay I'm here to comfort you" pat. More like "Ah, shape up champ".
"You know what Snips, I'm.......kind of tired right now. How about we pick up where we left off when we come back next time."
I nodded and, without even a sparing glance to his direction, I went to gather my stuff.

Patience hurried away from me to grab her stuff. I though, was left standing there playing an advanced version of 20 Questions with myself.
It's truly amazing. EVERY SINGLE TIME I have any type of interaction with her, she leaves me with thoughts -and feelings- I don't want.
I mean, where do I start! She acts innocent, self-conscious, and eager to melt into the background, yet at the most random of times she'll dish out a boat load of humor and sarcasm, with side of confidence and temper to match. Why?! Which half is supposed to be real?
And what's the deal with her wanting to learn what I do in the first place? At first I figured her reasons were for something shallow. Like she just wanted to get closer to me or wants to seem tough to some little boyfriend of hers. I don't know, girl stuff. But watching that escapade just now, I'd be a total idiot if I kept that line off thought up.
Who's got her so scared that she's willing to walk into a gym full of criminals and fist happy psychos?
I looked back at the large punching bag I had pulled her away from less than a few minutes ago. The hanging structure was still lightly swaying back and forth from the beating it took.
She really did go all out. The tension made with every one of her hits had resonated throughout the gym.
I know rage when I see it. All you see is red, while it comes out raw and in powerful yet uncontrollable bursts. And this thin framed, feisty brunette, is carrying a highly suppressed heap of it.
Does she even know it's there? Or is she just a confused as I am? After all, this is the second time she's blown a fuse I front of me. Was she always like this?
"Our first time training and I'm already going off the deep end.." I muttered in frustration with myself. "I gotta stop thinking so much."
"What do you have to stop doing?" A familiar voice flowed out from behind me. I almost got whiplash from how fast I spun around.
"Nothing," I scratched the back of my neck and nodded towards the front door. "You got all your stuff?" She used her free hand to gesture to the small gym bag hanging from her shoulder.
I began to walk towards the front door when Patience randomly grabbed my arm.
"What's with all these buddies of yours? Before I was like a piece of meat. Now, they are making looks like I'm their long lost brother."
I had noticed that already. It doesn't take a genius to know why.
"You earned their respect." I could see the incoming thoughts of confusion spreading across her face, so I simply made a thumb gesture towards, the now still punching bag.
She followed the gesture and made a silent 'Oh' with her mouth.
We walked out the front door and into the crisp evening air. Its still late September, so thank god it isn't too cold yet.
The winter months are a pain, and considering the fact that I always seem to be outside in wife beaters and gym shorts, it puts me in a irritable state all the way to June. Trey calls it a my 'Annual Pissy Fit' , whatever that means.
"So, I guess I'll see you at school." Patience said, biting the inside of her lip.
That's an interesting habit...
"I'll just call, when I get time to train you." I said starting to walk away. A sudden thought stopped me in my tracks. "Wait, how did you get here?" I questioned, rotating half my body to face her. Patience's mouth curved into a grin.
"I'm best friends with superman, so he flew me here. Isn't that obvious Sawyer? You will never believe how fast we went. I was like, 'its a bird, its a plane...NO its me!'" I only made a flat look in response, to conceal my amusement. " Fine. I called a taxi. Why? What's up?"
"I just was wondering if you were crazy enough to walk all the way here from your house" I said.
Patience looked in every direction, as if she was surveying the block. She locked eyes with me and raised both eyebrows giving me a classic 'you are joking right?' expression.
"Have some faith Dean. I don't think anyone's that stupid."
An uncontianable smile started popping up again.
After she called the cab company, I waited with her until a taxi came. Her phone had been dead, so she actually needed mine to call. Being the nice guy I am, I gave it to her. I swear the man on the other side must have been as dense as a rock, because she was on the phone for like five minutes.
On the bright side, I went home with a wonderfully earned set of five bucks.
~A/N~ Ok, so this chapter my have been a little rushed. But I'm happy I got it out. I'm thinking about putting myself on a proper schedule for these updates.
I've got thinking to do. But for now, expect another chapter in by next Friday, or if I'm fortunate, even sooner. Until next time! :)
