It's the Sunday night before exams start. Lily's head is deep inside her book but she can't concentrate. The Marauders are sneaking about. Leaving traces of fluttering pages and blushing girls, and boys. James looks sad. His mouth is turned down into a frown. But when he sees Lily staring silently at her Potions text book he smiles to himself. How can nobody else see how beautiful she is? Her sparkling green eyes and deep auburn hair are the perfect combination, James couldn't find a more beautiful girl if he tried.
"James, hurry up!" Sirius' demanding voice echoes around the silent library. Lily's head shoots up at the sound of James' name. She instantly blushes when she sees James smiling at her.
For the next hour the Marauders proceed to create chaos in the library, finally, when they're about to leave, Lily stands up and goes to return her library books. Sirius and James exchange a secretive look, this is why they came to the library in the first place.
Slowly, silently, James creeps up to Lily. He is looking at her through the bookshelf but she is filling the gap too quickly with books, eye contact has a slim chance of happening.
"Lily?" Lily jumps at the sound if the Gryffindor boy's voice. She takes a second to recover and looks into his gleaming hazel eyes.
"Yes?" Lily starts to walk along the bookshelf, placing books into their spots every few seconds. James walks along with her, eyes never leaving her eyes unless a book comes in the way.
" How are you?" A flash of disappointment covers Lily's face before disappearing suddenly. She wishes he had said something else. Something personal.
"I'm fine," James knows Lily better than that.
"You know, Sirius said that if a girl says that they're fine then she actually isn't fine. At all." James smiles at the look of guilt on Lily's face.
"Well, I like this guy but he doesn't like me back, and I know it's stupid because well, you're James, you probably don't care away." James' hand reaches through the book case and strokes Lily's cheek.
"He must be a pretty amazing to be able to get you all flustered. Always remember; I do care, a lot." James walks away from a flustered Lily. He leaves behind a smiling Lily but he creates a possibility. A possibility for more moments like these in the future. But hopefully in the future they will be on the same side of the bookshelf.
