Chapter twenty-three
Reagan
The day went by painfully slow. I wasn't sure if it was because I was bored out of my ever loving mind because the captain had benched me to get the rest of my case files written up, or if it was because Daisy occupied most, if not all, of my thoughts. I tried my best not to let my face tell my feelings again and stuck to not talking to anyone. Aaron had come up to me a few times asking if I was okay and once I'd nodded and given him one word replies, he'd gotten the idea that I wanted him to go away.
I was sitting, still typing away when I heard a familiar feminine voice walking down towards me. And it wasn't the one I was wanting to hear. Layla was strutting down the room like it was a fucking fashion show or some shit while staring directly at me. I knew from Jimmy that not answering her texts or calls was probably going to piss her off, but I didn't think she'd show up at the damn station.
"We need to talk." She paused and put her hands on her hips strategically. It made her chest stick out in a way that looked like a very tempting offering, but I wasn't interested in her. I wasn't interested in anyone except for a certain blue-eyed nurse.
"Do we now?" I finished printing my report and set it in the stack of the others that I needed to take to Captain's office before I left today. She took a few steps closer to me and narrowed her eyes.
"Yes. You haven't answered any of my texts or my calls. You can't just drop me like I'm disposable, Reagan." If only she knew that that's all women were to me. They were objects that I used to please myself with whenever I had wanted. Layla had been nothing more than a quick fuck that I hadn't even gotten to finish and as of right now, I was so glad that I hadn't.
"But I can, and I will. Now you can either turn your ass around and leave, or I can have someone escort you out. Your choice." She gasped as I threw my words at her. My tone was flat and unaffected. It was a skill that I had mastered well over the years. After I let the shock of my rejection sink in, I got up and headed towards the break room.
"You're a fucking dick, you know that!" She yelled it loud enough for half of the room to hear, but I just kept walking. I didn't want to give her a reaction because that's what attention whores like Layla wanted. I entered the doorway and went straight to fridge to grab a bottle of water. What I really wanted was some whiskey straight, but I couldn't have that right now.
"Damn. I knew Layla was crazy, but I'd never had her hunt me down before. You must have either left her or been interrupted. Which was it?" Jimmy's tall physique filled the doorframe. His eyebrows were arched as he looked at me from across the room.
"Interrupted," I said without thinking. Jimmy crossed his arms over his chest and nodded unsurprisingly. He'd fucked Layla a few times from what he'd told me. He had said that I'd have to watch out because she was a bitch when things didn't go her way, and at the time, I had been confident in my abilities when it came to sex that I was certain that I would fulfill every need she'd had. What I hadn't planned on was being caught by the one person I'd wanted the most.
"Figures. By who?" Oh shit. Did I lie here or tell the truth?
"Some random chick. Didn't stay long, but long enough for Layla to run out with her tail between her legs." Daisy watching Layla and I was our little secret, and I wanted to keep it that way. I'd dreamt about that moment often and each time it ended with something other than me walking out of the bathroom. That was something her older brother had no business knowing.
"She used to like people walking in on her. It made her hotter, but ever since she got threatened with being fired if it happened again she's been a bitch." I snorted and finished off my water bottle before poking my head out of the room to make sure Layla had left. When I saw that the coast was clear, I stepped out and made my way back over to where I'd been working. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket and pulled it out to see that I had a text message. I couldn't help but get excited in hoping that it was Daisy wanting to talk about last night, but when I read the name on my notification bar, my excitement dissolved.
Amara: You busy tonight?
Well, shit. As if this day couldn't get any fucking worse?
Daisy
"Daisy!"
"Hi, sweet girl, come give me a hug." Lanie Corbin wrapped her slender arms around me as I bent down slightly to hug her back. When she pulled away, she beamed up at me with that smile that was so similar to her mother's. Blythe Corbin was breathtakingly beautiful. She had long dark hair and shinning eyes that lit up like a night sky. It was no wonder Krit Corbin had fallen in love with her. Plus, she was sweet as can be. The Corbin's had four kids total with Ty being the oldest, Holland and Saffron as the middle pair of twins, and then there was little Lanie who was the baby. She was by far the perfect combination of Krit and Blythe. She had Blythe's facial features and eyes along with dirty blonde hair that was the imprint of both parents. She was kind and gentle like her momma, but fierce and blunt like her daddy. No matter what you could always trust Lanie to tell you the nice truth.
"I like your scrubs today, Daisy May," she said, and I looked down at my Cinderella print top with pale blue bottoms. Cinderella was my favorite Disney princes. I had always loved the idea of having a pair shoes that fixed everything. When I was little, I vowed that one day I would have those special heels that made me feel like I was the most beautiful woman in the world. I was still waiting to find them, though.
"Thank you very much." I motioned over to the scale that gave me her weight and height, and she stepped up on it easily. The scale gave me both and I shook my head in wonder. "You get taller and taller every time, Lanie, I swear." When I jotted down her height and weight, she looked over at the person to my right and crossed her arms over her chest.
"You owe me ten dollars. I'm over four and a half inches." Ty Corbin rolled his eyes and dug out a ten dollar bill from his pocket.
"Fine." She smiled and stepped down off the scale to go into the room I stood beside.
"Pleasure doing business with you, big bro." She stuck the money in her pocket and Ty followed her inside. You wouldn't think Ty was the type of brother that took his little sister to doctor's appointments. He was tatted up, like his father, and could sometimes be a real jerk when he wanted to be. But the whole bad-boy thing worked for him. I swear, I've never seen anyone rock a pair of tight black jeans, a fitted white shirt, and pair of Vans like he could. The colorful hints of the tattoos underneath his shirt made the females in this town go crazy. His short blonde hair and crystal blue eyes were other major points for him, too.
"Don't get used to it, little sis." Ty loved his younger sisters and no matter how much badass he put into his smile, it was evident. The way he was trying to hide a smile from Lanie was downright adorable, and I had no doubt that if this side of him was the one he'd show girls all the time, then he'd have them all wrapped around his finger in an instant.
"Alright, climb up there, sweetheart. You know the drill." Lanie hopped up on the small bed covered in white paper. Ty leaned against the wall with his arms crossed and pulled out his Iphone from his pocket. A small smile touched his face as he looked down at the screen.
"What's got you all happy over there?" I asked as I took Lanie's blood pressure.
"The ladies. They love me," was his response as he typed something and put the phone back where it came from.
"You mean 'lady' as in Jacey." Lanie grinned as if she knew a secret we didn't.
"Jacey Stone? Jess and Jason's daughter?" Ty nodded and studied the charts of the endocrine and digestive systems on the walls.
"Yeah, she's coming down in a few months. She said she needs a break from the modeling world." I rolled my eyes, but didn't say anything about it. When it came to Ty Corbin and Jacey Stone, you did exactly that. You kept your mouth shut.
"Saffron told me that when you go to see her at the mansion that you sleep together. Do y'all sleep in the same bed?" Ty's eyes widened, and I burst out in laughter. Leave it to the Corbin twin with the personality of Krit to explain to the little one about their brother's sexual behavior.
"Motherfucker, I just might kill her one day. I really might..." Ty whispered.
"I heard that!" I kept laughing as I walked out the door, still listening to Ty try to explain to Lanie about Saffron's explanation. Sometimes, my family was just too much, but I loved them with all my heart and I wouldn't trade them for anything.
