Chapter twenty-five
Daisy
I finished my day with two cases of the flu, a kid with strep, and three check-ups. As tiring as my job could be, I did love it, and I was always a little sad to leave at the end of the day. The drive home was quiet always as was when I got to my apartment. It was empty except for the walls of picture frames with the smiling faces of my family resting in them. I wasn't sure how thankful I was to have Amanda drop by the office today, but it was a heavy amount. I couldn't think of a better atmosphere to keep myself from daydreaming about things I shouldn't.
After I'd been home for about an hour or so and was sitting on my couch with a glass of milk and some leftover lemon cake I'd picked up from lunch, I heard my phone ringing. I paused Ian Gallagher's face from Shameless on my television screen and searched for my IPhone 6. Corey's name flashed on the screen when I held it in my hand. I pressed the answer button and put the phone to my ear.
"Hey."
"Hey, beautiful. What are you doing?" I smiled at the word "beautiful", and set my food and drink on the table. Hearing that adjective from a male who was not a part of my family was nice.
"Just watching Netflix. What about you?"
"I'm about to go out and have some drinks with some old friends. Thought I might could extend the invitation." His voice sounded so much deeper over the phone. It was the type of deep that you could fall asleep against, but not the kind that washed over you like warm water, making your body hum with complete pleasure.
"Tonight?" I asked and he chuckled on the other end.
"Yeah, I know that it's short notice and that you have work tomorrow, but we wouldn't be gone long. Plus, it's an excuse to see you again. I really enjoyed last night." The guilt started to set in again, but I forced it down.
"I'd love to. What time will you be here?"
"Around eight." I looked at the clock on the wall and saw that it was seven-thirteen. I had about forty-five minutes to make myself look like I was worthy to date a lawyer. Something that I was confident I could do.
"I'll be ready."
"Excellent! I will see you soon." I told him goodbye and switched off the TV. I carried my dirty dishes to the sink and rummaged through my closet to find something to wear. I figured that if I went out with Corey again maybe it could erase the burning desire I had for Reagan. Maybe not permanently, but just for a little while. Also maybe my guilty conscience would shut up.
Reagan
I sat at the bar with Amara in my lap. Her long blonde hair was pulled over to the side of her face, leaving the side of her neck closest to me completely exposed. Her dress was so tight that it looked like body paint.
"Are you gonna have a drink?" she asked as her fingers played with the hair on the back of my neck. I shook my head and gave her a tight smile. The only reason why I was here was because I needed a distraction. Amara had texted me and I'd accepted her offer to meet her at the local bar and club here in Sea Breeze.
"Not tonight, sweetheart. One of us has to stay sober and that's your third martini." She gave me a lazy smile, proving my point. She may not be drunk, but she was buzzed. Buzzed is still worthy of a DUI.
"I'm not drunk," she said. I patted her hip lightly and asked the bartender for a coke. I needed to drink something because my mouth was dry as hell and it was starting to get uncomfortable.
"I didn't say you were drunk." She bit her lip teasingly and leaned forward to trail kisses up my neck. I slid my hand around to rest on her lower back and closed my eyes. I needed to enjoy the feeling of another woman's lips on me. I needed my dirty thoughts to be focused elsewhere besides on my partner's little sister. The same little sister who had tasted like fucking honey when I'd kissed her and had whimpered from touch ever so softly in my dreams.
"Let's go to the back. There's a room where the bands hang out before they go on stage and it has a couch in it. Unless you prefer a more spontaneous spot," she whispered in my ear. I had opened my eyes to tell her yes when they locked on a familiar pair of baby blues that stood across the room.
Smooth, creamy legs stretched out from below a black cocktail dress that ended in a pair of dark red pumps. Her hair was styled in messy curls around her face and her eyes widened when they found mine as they roamed up and down her sexy-as-hell body. I held Daisy's gaze until the guy she was with turned her attention from me to himself. I didn't like that. I didn't like it one fucking bit.
