Chapter one
The Years Before
To most, aliens are scary, evil, and hell bent on eliminating all of the human race. With all the movies and comics and other media, it's safe to say most people are afraid of the thought of aliens coming to earth. This is exactly what happened. Mass hysteria ensued when scientists at research stations around the world noticed a diamond formation of ships that has a direct intercept with the planet earth.
"There nothing to worry about," Leon said soothingly.
"Its not ok!" Leon's roommate screams.
Leon snickers under his breath, "She always looks hotter when she's mad" he thinks, "With her dark blue eyes, golden hair, and perfectly curved body, it's a wonder why I haven't proposed..."
"Are you even listening?!?" She screeches. " Aliens are coming to Earth!"
"Its not for another two years. Anyway, as humans, we have prepped ourselves for this day with state-of-the-art weaponry. In two years, every nation could have hundreds of nukes to take care of any threat!"
"What if, they, are immune?" she challenges, "What if what we have is ineffective against them?"
"Heather, just stop, ok? They will get here in two years, two whole years, and who said the ships even carried life forms? They could be drones sent to scout out earth." Leon says finally getting frustrated.
"It's alien! So what if they are drones, drones still can kill. Look at our military drones, machine guns and rockets and lasers and e.m.ps!"
"But what have we, as humans, done to provoke an attack? Living? Breathing? EXISTING?!"
She growls quietly, knowing she can't win this one, " Sometimes I wish, you didn't have a minor in law!" She yells while slamming the door to left their dorm room.
Wow, thought Leon, Too bad I'm only going to see her for only one more month. But, I can't wait to graduate from the university. Specifically A&T State University of North Carolina. Major in Astronautics, with a minor in law. Also one of the few who are already accepted into the C.E.S.T, also known as, Confederation of Engineers for Space Travel, the think tank organized by the United Nation to combine all the country's space programs and standardize all current and future space colonization and exploration.
"Only the best and brightest can get in. The most Elite minds of our time are working now to capitalize space for the greater good of humanity..." Leon remember the representative saying, "... So far, only one of the students sitting in this room has qualified, which is immensely greater the most schools can gloat about."
Unfortunately, the flyer that came in to congratulate me on being "Elite" also showed no vacation time, multiple physicals per year, luxury living for one but, the income was in 9 figure range. Plus, I'm automatically eligible for any space fight of my choosing, whether it be a short suborbital jump or a 20 year mission to a new solar system. The hardest part is do I really want to go with the impending alien ships arrival?
" If you don't go because of me," Heather said when I first got the flyer," there is going to be hell to pay!"
"Obviously I'm going! What, do you think I would drop the chance to go to space? There is nothing more important to me than going to space!"
Heather mumbles something incoherent, then states, " At least you'll be happy." She leaves the room, deflated and later, comes back to the dorm drunk.
