Archers POV
"Almost there," I assure Alaska for the hundredth time. She rolls her eyes and trudges after me.
"I know. You don't need to keep saying that," she laughs, then she falls silent. Her eyes become focused and her body tense. "Shhhh," she whispers and slowly gets her bow from her back. She carefully pulls out one of the many arrows and aims it somewhere into the large bushes. She bites her lip and lets the arrow go. It bolts through a small gap in the leaves and she looks at me with a grin, practically beaming with pride, while I'm left gaping at her in amazement. How could she do that? She suddenly sprints into the bushes so I follow. She stops about a meter away and beams at her catch.
Laying on the soft ground is a Flesh Eater with her arrow through its forehead. It looks just as ugly as I remember.
"Wow," I say quietly, still in shock. "Where'd you learn that?"
She yanks the arrow free and opens to mouth to speak but stops suddenly. Her eyes go alarmed and focused again, darting around the leafy green forest. She turns swiftly and sends an arrow through into a Flesh Eater right behind me. But her eyes don't relax. "Quick," she says in a low voice. Its one word but I know what it means.
We take off running.
I dodge branches and logs as we escape. I hear the snarling of the disgusting creatures behind us so I don't stop. Until, that is, I get my foot stuck in an over turned tree. "Alaska!" I call. She freezes and turns back to me. Then she looks behind me at where the Flesh Eaters are obviously getting closer. It's only a second but I can see the debate in her eyes. Seemingly made up her mind, she runs to my side. "Thought you'd ditch me," I breath as she helps me break my ankle free.
Her eyes keep nervously darting behind me. "Uh huh," she says before tearing my leg free and yanking me along. "There is a cave up here!" She yells as we run. "Right about... NOW!" And she shoves me through a wall of moss. A scream escapes my lips as I fall on my side. Pain spikes through my side but I quickly recover. Alaska is at the edge of the damp cave, peering at the stupid Flesh Eaters running past.
She comes and sits down beside me and starts fiddling with a flower that has grown through the cracked ground. "Thanks," I say. "You didn't have to save me."
She shoots me a glare. "Yes I did," she snaps and storms over to the other side of the cave.
Wow. What's happened to her?
I decide to give her some space. She's probably just pissed that she almost died today. I curl into a ball, ignoring the icy cold that the damp floor gives. And I close my eyes.
I lay there, trying to sleep for who knows how long, when I feel something touch my back and warmth radiating from the middle. "Night," Alaska whispers, almost too low to hear. She must think I'm asleep. A small smile grows on my face but I stay silent. Until I finally do fall asleep.
"Hurry up," someone hisses at me. I feel my body shaking and I snap my eyes open. Alaska is towering above me with big, urgent eyes. "They're here," she whispers, her voice pleading. "We have to go!" I scramble up and instinctively survey the cave. She rolls her eyes. "Outside, doofus." She grabs my hand and pulls me after her.
We get to the moss wall and she yanks me behind. "Owww," I whine and get a glare in response. That's when I hear it. The eerie moans coming from the other side.
"Ready?" She says. Her eyes dance with excitement while mine widen with fear. What is she thinking?! Before I can answer me darts from behind the moss. The moans get louder and closer. I squeeze my eyes close and take a deep breath before darting from the cave.
The scene takes me by surprise.
Alaska is nowhere in sight and Flesh Eaters are the only thing in sight. I hesitate to grab my dagger but finally regain my senses enough to stab one of the creatures in the forehead. Icky black liquor oozes from the wound, making me gag. I'm knocked off my feet and slammed into the ground by yet another Fleshy. I drive the dagger through its head and scramble up. I duck as a crazed arm reaches for me and kick out its legs.
Then I run.
I sprint and end up in a tree with the Fleshys down below. "Shit," I mutter to myself. Now I'm screwed. As I'm distracted one of the things manage to grab hold of my ankle. I attempt to shake it off and eventually just knock in the head with the butt of my dagger. Another one drags itself up the tree and grips my leg with both hands, drawing long scratches down my shin. Pain shoots up my thigh as blood starts to drip from the wound. The snarls get louder, wilder. I kick the Fleshy off and pull my feet up to my chest.
God damnit Alaska!
That's when I notice the first arrow pierce the Fleshys scalp. My eyes dart to where Alaska is rooted in a tree, taller then mine and probably stronger. "Archer!" She screams. I follow her gaze to the Fleshy that is nearing my spot. Followed by about twenty others, more pooling at the bottom.
I manage to claw further up the tree despite the slick surface from the blood on my leg and the stinging. A few more arrows fly but it isn't enough. "Jump!" So I do.
I land on about three other Fleshys and immediately take off sprinting.
A few seconds later Alaska runs, or limos, beside me with a big grin on her face. We stop as soon as the creepy moans are completely faded and the sun is appearing over the horizon. I had barely registered that it was still dark until now. "Good morning, Archer," Alaska chirps, bent over and catching her breath.
"What the hell was that!" I yell, gasping for air after running for twenty minutes straight.
She merely grins and shrugs. "I like to keep things interesting."
I gawk at her in amazement. Thats her idea of interesting?! "You're insane," I sigh, shaking my head. "We could've died."
"But we didn't," She says, pouncing onto an over turned log and balancing, her arms stretched by her sides to help.
I open and close my mouth, unsure of what to say. "How are you so awake?" I ask. "Didn't you just wake up?"
She stops and turns to me, looking guiltily to the ground. "Maybe I never slept."
"What? Why?"
Her eyes go narrow and angry. "None of your damn business," she snaps.
I take a step back and try to calm her down. "S-Sorry. I d-didn't mean to p-pry."
Her face softens and she rolls her eyes. "Again with the stuttering?" She laughs. "I didn't sleep because... because the dreams were too real." I watch as the joy goes from her eyes and she plonks herself down on the log. She senses my confusion and continues, "I keep watching my parents deaths. I miss 'em I guess." She looks ashamed, for some strange reason, and shrugs. "Anyway, best be off." I can only watch in amazement as she picks herself up and carries on.
Then I realise, I think I like her.
Like like her.
Love like her.
