Matt and Sarah
Matt and I had been dating for a long time, and today was our one year anniversary. Matt said it was a surprise, but to dress nicely. As I curled your hair, I looked into the mirror at my panda pajamas. It was around 4:00 and Matt was coming to pick me up around 5. I wanted to look nice for him; he liked it when I dressed up.
After my hair was finally all done, hanging in beautiful curls, I picked up my eyeliner and mascara, putting on (a little more dramatic than usual), and swiped on my favorite light pink lipstick. I smiled at myself in the mirror, happy with your appearance. I walked over to my closet, flicking on the light and stepping inside.
I grabbed my white mid-thigh dress with the thick straps. I pulled it on, zipping up the back and pulling my hair out. I clipped the crescent moon necklace Matt had given me for our six month anniversary around my neck and tied on the bracelet from my grandmother as well as my favorite heart ring. I glanced down at my gold nails and stepped into my white flats. I looked in the mirror, finally proud of my appearance.
The doorbell rang from downstairs, and I grabbed my phone and wallet before hopping down the stairs, more than excited to see Matt. I yanked the door open and smiled at my boyfriend as he stood in a pair of khaki pants, a white shirt and black jacket, holding a white rose. His hair was spiked up as usual, and he had the sweetest smile plastered on his face. I stepped outside, taking the rose in my hands. I looked down at it, how it matched my dress. I looked back up and smiled at him before embracing him in a hug.
I took in his sweet scent. It wasn’t the usual teenage boy Axe scent, it wasn’t too musty for me, it was perfect. Like honey… but not too girly. “Happy Anniversary, Sarah,” he whispered to me, the smile not leaving his cheeks.
“Happy Anniversary, Matt,” I said back, giving him a soft kiss on the lips.
“Shall we?” he asked, reaching out his hand.
“Of course,” I said, closing the door to my house and taking his hand. His fingers wrapped around mine, thumb rubbing circles into the back of my hand. “So, where are we going?”
“I told you, it’s a surprise!” he said, chuckling. The sun was still high in the sky, the June weather warm, but not too hot. Matt had asked me out this same exact day last year by putting sticky notes all over my room, each one saying the words ‘will you be my girlfriend?’ He sat in the middle of my room for four hours waiting for me to get home. It was probably the most adorable thing I’d seen in my entire life.
We walked down the street, heading towards the beach. It was getting cooler and Matt knew that one of my favorite things to do was walk on the beach at night. There’s always a subtle wind blowing and the sand is cool enough to walk on. The water is cold, but it feels perfect on your toes. Matt used to take me here all the time at night last summer, when it was still warm. But throughout the whole school year, it was way too cold to walk on the beach. But we got out of school yesterday, so I was ecstatic about more beach walks this summer.
We arrived at the sand and I slipped off my shoes and placed them right next to Matt’s on the sidewalk. He picked me up and swung me around, running onto the beach with me in his arms. I giggled as he held onto me tighter.
“I love you so much!” he screamed, jumping into the water and splashing his feet down. The cuffs of his pants were drenched, but he held me up, not allowing the water to touch me. My hair flew about, the curls waving in the wind.
“I love you, too!” I screamed up at the sky as he tramped out of the water and back onto the sand, carrying me. “Wait, Matt! Where are we going now?” He dropped me and picked up all of the shoes, handing me my flats. We began to walk down the beach towards the town, the lights on the streets twinkling in the fading sun.
“We’re going to go eat… cause you know we both like eating,” he said, laughing. We arrived at a tiny little restaurant that I’ve never even seen before. It was tucked into the side of a building facing the water. He smiled at me and sat down at one of the tables on the outside, leaving his shoes off and dropping them on the floor. I copied him and sat across. He grabbed my hand across the table and looked out over the ocean.
“I’m so happy I found you,” he said quietly, still gazing at the water. I smiled at his comment, looking down.
“I bet I’m happier about you,” I said.
“That’s not even possible,” Matt said, looking at me and laughing. “I do love you so much, Sarah. So, so, so much.”
“I love you, too, Matt.”
