When 12-year-old friends started smoking cigarettes, Miranda went along with them, just to be 'cool'. One day, Miranda's Mother found some cigarettes in Miranda's clothes drawer- and she was furious.
She yelled at Miranda and slapped her hard across the face and body. Since then, she has hit Miranda repeatedly. Miranda is shocked at her Mothers behaviour. She doesn't understand why she is acting that way, and she's scared that her Mother no longer loves her.
