Rylie

I waited outside the door to the office, my back leaning against the brick wall. Inside, Connor was getting his class schedule, student diary and all that other stuff the new kid did or got on the first day. Normally Aidan picked me up and took me to school but Connor’s mum had asked me to take Connor on his first day so I had to say yes. Plus, taking myself to school meant I could get there early and not just before class started like Aidan always did. I hated being late; which explained why I was waiting outside the office at eight o’clock in the morning when school didn’t start until eight forty.

“You’re early, Rylie,” I heard a voice say. I looked over and saw my best friend, Rebecca Burrows. Beccy’s mum was a teacher so she was always here before anyone else.

“Yeah,” I said with a grin as the girl walked over to me. Beccy had hazel eyes and dark red hair that she hated but I loved. She was a tall girl and you couldn’t help but love her. She saw the best in everyone and made me proud to call her my best friend. “I ditched Aidan this morning.”

Beccy’s smile lit up the hallway at the mention of Aidan. “Oh my gosh! I totally forgot about your anniversary! How was it? Was it even better than the last two times? How many times did you do it before you were too exhausted?”

I had to laugh at Beccy. The girl refused to swear yet she had one of the filthiest minds around. “It didn’t quite go to plan but we made up for it on Saturday.”

“Rylie Jilian Willow. I demand details this instant,” said Beccy, crossing her arms and giving me her best glare.

“Not here, Bec. Anyone could hear,” I protested. Bec rolled her eyes and grabbed my arm to pull me away from the office. “Wait, we can’t go! I’m waiting for… someone.” I wanted to surprise everyone with Connor.

I saw Beccy’s eyes shoot up with interest.

“Who?” she demanded eagerly, pulling away from me and pressing her face against the tinted windows of the office. It was no use though; the tinting made looking in impossible but looking out was crystal clear and I was sure that Connor and the office ladies were laughing at her.

“She’s waiting for me,” a masculine voice with a slight accent said. I had to admit, now that I had gotten over my shock and anger at Connor, the British accent made me swoon just a little. I turned to face Connor at the same time Beccy did and I couldn’t help but laugh as she squealed and jumped into Connor’s arms.

“Connor! You’re back!” Connor laughed and hugged Beccy tightly. A strange sense of jealousy arose as I stood awkwardly to the side and watched my friend hug my ex. I knew the feeling was wrong – I was with Aidan – but I couldn’t help it. Connor was and always will be my first love.

When they finally pulled away after what seemed like years, Connor gave me a half grin and an eyebrow raise at my expression. I rolled my eyes and replaced it with a smile of my own.

“How are you? When did you get back? How was England? Are you – “

“Whoa, one question at a time,” laughed Connor. “I got back Friday and I’m good. England was cold and miserable but I had fun. Now, I gotta get to my locker and unload these books. Come with?”

Beccy nodded eagerly, her eyes gleaming and fixated on Connor. “You have to tell me all about it. Did you meet One Direction?”

Connor laughed and threw his arm over Beccy’s shoulder. I felt all the muscles in my body tense immediately. I did not like Connor’s arm on Beccy at all. It was so… so what Rylie? Wrong? You have no say over Connor anymore. You gave up that right a long time ago. I was so caught up on Connor’s arm on Beccy’s shoulder that I missed Connor’s reply but I didn’t miss their laughing. I was taken by surprise when I felt Connor’s other arm drape around my shoulder. I looked up to see him grinning at me.
