---------------------Chapter Three
A low puff of breath fell from Camila's mouth as she shut the door behind herself. The too-constricting jacket she had donned on her drive home was slipped off in one quick and unceremonious movement and hung carelessly on the shabby rack to her left. She trudged forward, today's events swarming in her mind which caused her face to unconsciously pull up to a scowl of annoyance.
She ran an aggravated hand through her hair as she made her way into the kitchen, knowing the house to be empty. No one would be home for a good two hours, with her two siblings in their school's after care program, and her parents taking each extra shift they can manage.
Camila tugged the door of the fridge open, grabbing a promising bag of apple slices from the top shelf before stepping back to bump the door shut with her hip. The fridge before her stood littered with family photographs, ranging from pictures of herself and her siblings when they first moved into their current house, the three of them with wide smile and hopeful glints in their eyes; to pictures of Camila's father and mother, the two exchanging a soft kiss while seated on the now-creaky swing hanging on the back porch. An uncontrollable smile spread onto the brunettes lips as she turned from the kitchen to head up the Victorian stairs leading to the second floor where her bedroom waited. She threw her small backpack onto her bed as she walked in, toeing off her shoes and kicking them in the general direction of her closet before falling flat on her stomach onto the mattress of her bed. A huff of breath slipped out of her lips as she moved to roll onto her back, blinking up at the bland white ceiling above her with an exasperated sigh. Camila had kept the package of apples in hand, now tearing through the plastic to grab one to munch on absentmindedly.
Camila's gaze flickered about her room before landing on the backpack sitting inches from her. The blue eyed girls face contorted in annoyance as she groaned, rolling onto her side to grab the bag and spill it's contents onto her bed.
She worked quickly, finishing the pounds of homework in what felt like record time, which had resulted in lasting her until six in the evening. Camila had heard her mother and siblings clammer into the house around a half an hour ago and payed them no mind, her thoughts occupied by deciphering the meaning of some all important Robert Frost's tellings of getting confused in some forest. The solution had seemed simple enough to Camila; he should take the road most traveled. Risks weren't worth taking when a bad outcome could be the result was her justification.
The sound of her name ringing through the house in her mothers voice made Camila finally look up from the text books splayed out before her. She raised her voice to yell a questioning 'what' in return, waiting an unnecessary amount of time for a response before grunting indignantly and rolling out of her bed to trudge downstairs.
"What, mother?"
Camila questioned once more, the irritation evident in her tone as she reached the bottom of the stairs. She raised her eyebrows at the sight in front of her: Nicholas, her youngest brother at the age of three was sat atop the table, laughing with a glint of glee in his shocking blue eyes as he chewed on a pen Camila assumed belonged to Sophia, the middle child at the age of twelve.Sophia sat with her converse-clad feet resting on the table and her phone in her hand. The young girls books lay spewed across the wood table as their mother shut the fridge with an exasperated sigh. Elizabeth, Camila's mother, offered a dreary and faked smile before nodding her head towards the two seated at the table.
"Give me a hand with them, will you? Soph needs to get her homework done-", her mother's voice raised in an indirect command towards Sophia before continuing, "and I just can't watch Nick and cook dinner at the same time"
A quiet and defeated sigh left Camila's pursed lips once she nodded in agreement, leaning over the table to swipe Nicholas into her arms carefully as she sat down beside Sophia. The three year old squirmed in protest on her lap for a few moments before pouting his lips and losing resolve as he curled comfortably in his sisters lap. Camila's blue eyes scanned over the sheet of unsolved math equations sitting in front of her sister before she grabbed an adjacent pencil and started to fill in the beginnings of each problem.
"There. You should be able to figure them out with what I wrote, soph."
Camila muttered to the twelve year old as she reached over to swipe the phone from Sophia's hands. The young girls hands flew up in protest as she prepared to argue before falling silent under Camila's glare.
The girls attention was drawn to Nicholas, smiling animatedly at the young boy seated in her lap as she simply questioned him on his day. The three year olds answers were choppy but said with glee as he replied to Camila, his blue eyes twinkling with joy at the attention he was being given.
Dinner was ready half an hour later, a simple plate of spaghetti set before
everyone at the table. Grace was said with no true conviction before
they ate, each person clearing their dishes in little time. After the
meal, each went off their own way. Sophia to finish her homework,
Nicholas and their mother to lull the three year old to sleep, and
Camilla up to her room to resume her nearly completed assignments. Her vision went fuzzy with fatigue as she began working, the
occasional yawn slipping from her lipsticked pink lips. Camila blinked forcefully, urging herself to stay awake and finish her work but her attempts were to no avail. The girls blue eyes fell shut finally, her body relaxing completely as Camila fell asleep with her head resting on her crossed arms.
-------The first thing to register was the complete discomfort. A soft groan left Camila as she tensed up, rolling her shoulders in an attempt to eradicate the sore feeling that'd overcome them. Her entire body seemed to have the same sore pain searing through it, which brought a cringe to Camila's face.
The second she had noticed once her eyes flashed open. She was in complete darkness, though she could easily deduce she was not where she had fallen asleep. Camila's body was sat upright, leaning back against what she assumed was a wall going by its hard and uncomfortable stature. Her arms strained to move but her hands were restrained to the wall behind her.
The third to register were the shaky and fear-dripped pants sounding to her right.
