The day started as normal, James woke up, got ready, Laura got up and made their coffee, handed James his cup and kissed him as he headed out the door, and then she went to her office, and emerged again at noon to make herself lunch. after she finished lunch she went to the bathroom, she was in there a while, but when she came out she was holding a small plastic stick and smiling. She walked slowly into her office, as if in a trance, picked up her phone, and called James.
"Hey babe, guess what!" she said, her eyes beginning to fill with tears.
"No, I haven't heard back from them yet" she replied to his guess of "The publisher accepted your book?!"
"Babe, I'm pregnant" she said, the tears starting to roll down her face.
she was silent for a while, then she tentatively said "babe?"
"Are- Are you sure?" he stammered.
"Well I'm holding the test right now and its saying yes, so yeah, I'm pretty sure" she replied, smiling and laughing slightly.
"Babe, thats great! I'm so happy! we're celebrating when I get home, I'll bring takeout from that Chinese place we had lunch at on Sunday, sound good?"
"That sounds amazing dear" she said, smiling wider.
"Great, I'll see you then."
"Okay, bye, love you!"
"I love you too hon" he said, and then hung up.
She clutched the phone to her chest and cried for a good 10 minutes before collecting herself and getting back to writing.
A few hours later James got home and quietly snuck up behind her, enveloping her in a big hug. she sprang out of her chair, turned around, and hugged him so hard he almost fell over.
"Babe, babe, jeez, let me breathe" he said laughing.
"Sorry" she said helping him steady himself
"Dinner is on the kitchen counter when you want it" he said with a smile
"Oh! Yes! Thank you dear!" she said hugging him again. Then she raced to the kitchen and started plating the food. He followed her, laughing slightly at how childish she was acting. He helped her plate everything and carry it out to the living room. They sat on the floor and ate while making plans for the baby's bedroom and planning names.
"How about Charlie for a boy?" James asked
"I love it, and James for his middle name, after his father" Laura said with a big grin on her face.
"Alright, if you say so" he said, chuckling a bit.
"And for a girl?"
"Hmm, Olivia?" he suggested.
"Nah, Lexi?"
"Too 'popular white girl' to me" he said, jokingly.
"How 'bout Piper" she suggested
"I like it, but I've known too many snotty Pipers, what about Sarah? I've never known a snotty Sarah"
"I love that, my childhood best friend was named Sarah"
"And her middle name?" he asked
"Hmm, how about Jane?"
"Sarah Jane Luthin," he said, testing the taste of the name "I love it, I love it almost as much as I love you" he said, planting a kiss on her lips.
They broke apart after a few minutes, both breathing a little heavy.
"I love you babe" Laura said.
"I love you too baby" James replied, kissing her nose.
"So, the baby's room," Laura said abruptly, "if we get a storage unit we can clear out the third bedroom and turn that into the baby's room"
"That sounds good, but will you be able to do it yourself? Cause I still have to work and I have a meeting on Saturday that I can't get out of."
"We could get one of those storage pods dropped off and I can fill it."
"How 'bout I have dad come by and help?" he suggested.
"No, I can do it myself" she insisted.
"If you say so" he said with a heavy sigh.
"Well I do say so, so ha" she said in a teasing tone.
"Alright," he said laughing "are you done eating dear?"
"Yes, I am, thank you babe" she said as he grabbed her plate, taking it to the kitchen.
She got up and walked over to the couch and plopped down, picking up the remote from the coffee table as she did so. She flipped through the channels till she found an old movie playing that piqued her interest. James joined her a few minutes later bringing two glasses of soda with him, he set them on the table and sat down next to Laura. the cuddled on the couch and sipped their soda as they watched the movie. When the movie was over Laura took their cups to the kitchen and rinsed them out and then joined James in bed. They talked a little while longer about plans for the baby's room and when they were going to tell relatives and friends, but eventually the chatter died away as they both fell asleep with huge smiles on their faces.
