CHAPTER 34

Rick's POV

I was holding an apple to the mouth of the black stallion. He was a fine brave horse. Almost all the horses in the Harrison's stables were fine and well bread but Night flame had warmed up to me all most instantly. My grandfather had given me horse riding lessons when I was a kid. And nowadays riding on Night Flame's back was my favourite pass time.

Ry and Adam were enjoying our picnic under the starry sky. Fred had packed our picnic in a nice big basket. Chris was reading a book for Joy, his back was resting on the pole of the garden lamp. Ry and Adam were using their butter knives as swords to enact the princes in Joy's book. Ry and Adam enacted the story as Chris read. Joy was having the time of her life as she pranced around on the picnic blanket clapping her hands. She occasionally served Ry a slap on the back of his head as he was the bad prince. Joy looked so much like Car. So alike that it was almost crazy.

Car and I had been left to ourselves over the past few days. As the other couples were quite busy doing whatever couples do. Car had been really strong in accepting her new life. She was wary but that was totally understandable.  I admired how Car handled everything that was thrown at her. She was tough, intense, funny when angered, funnier when stoned, she placed others before herself.....This could go on and on. I loved her.

Car and I had never spoken about what we were. I didn't know what she thought about 'us'. I wanted to tell her how I feel. But I had never loved a woman. And I wasn't very good at communicating feelings. I was emotionally challenged that way. And to top all my anxieties. I had done something last night and I didn't have the tiniest recollection of it. Though I did have a good idea of what had happened. Clue one was I had woken up naked in Car's bed. Clue two was that Car was seeing through me, it was like I was invisible to her. Urg! Could things get any worse!!

Night flame nudged my fingers gently as he had finished his apple. He neighed, pleading for another one and I reached for the apple bag. That was when I saw the coolest sight, ever. I heard an engine roar, I saw the under side of a car as it sailed a mere two inches above my head. The red Ferrari landed with a thud on the grass and screeched. Night flame shied away at the sight of the red beast.

I was marvelling at whatever had just happened. I had thought that such stunts were performed only in the movies. The screams brought me back to reality. I was not supposed to be excited. If I had been standing erect my head could be rolling beside one of Joy's toys on the grass. This was the car the girls had taken out. Holy ****!!! I was supposed to be worried!! Maybe even scared or concerned, not excited!!!

The car was headed for one of the lamp posts. It crashed into the silver pole. The lamp flickered and went out. The silver coloured pole, moaned in protest and leaned away from the car. The hood of the car popped open and smoke rose from the engines. The car looked like an angry bull with red eyes, snorting smoke out of its nostrils.

Ry and Adam cursed under their breaths as they reached the car. Chris was carrying Joy in his arms. He stood gaping in shock, pale and trembling. Joy's eyes were wide as saucers. Her eyes brimmed with tears but she never shed them.

A door was thrown open. I walked towards it as Audrey jumped out. She looked around with wild eyes. Mel and Ashley joined her. Mel's face was streaked with tears and Ashley's mouth was bloody, it looked like as if she had bit her tongue off.

"We are alive." Ashley screamed. Good her tongue was intact.

"We are alive." Audrey joined in. I gave them a brief inspection. All of them seemed to be fine.

"Car!!" Mel wailed as she realized her friend was missing.

I walked to the driver's seat. The door was jammed shut. Chris put Joy down and tried to force it open with his bare hands. I decided to help him by banging my fist on the dented metal. Chris must have been the hulk or something because the door did open. Car was trapped in between several SRP air bags. She looked frail and lifeless. The time stood still. I had to do something!! I reached for the butter knife in Ry's hand and slashed to deflated one of the air bags. Car almost slid of the seat as she wasn't wearing her seat belt.
