Chapter 14: The Trap in the Desert

It's been three days since we left the city and Ren is still unconscious. Kiko was helping me take care of him and her and I have really bonded. She confessed to me that she never knew her parents either. She is the free spirited soul when she's around friends but shy and awkward with strangers. She has a good handle on wind magic and specializes in powerful defensive spells.

"Hehe you know Rai, you really get me. You can sympathize with me in ways others can't, and your such a geek haha." I love her giggles and laughs and realized I truly love her, though it's been only a few days I've really gotten to know her and love her for not being afraid to confide in me.

"Hehe well only because I've been through similar circumstances and I understand your feelings because I've been through them. Haha and wait...did you call me a geek!?!?" She laughed and I laughed back and felt like this would be a perfect moment to kiss her. I simply smiled and leaned in and she too leaned in and just right before our lips met...

"AHHH HAVEN'T SLEEPT THAT GOOD IN DAYS!!" Ren killed the mood and we both pulled away, her blushing, me glaring at Ren for having such horrid timing! "Ey Rai, why are you staring at me like that?"

"Nothing you idiot! Lord of all times to awaken you choose now? Well your awake now, we should continue towards the Blaze Desert." We were staying in an Inn that evening in a nearby town. The sun was high in the sky, no clouds, no wind just a hot day. "It's probably going to be even hotter in the desert, make sure to bring loads of water and food, now lets head out.

I bought all three of us hats to give us some shade from the suns harsh rays. We left the city and began to walk a rocky path. After hours of walking we arrived at the desert. Only sand can be seen for miles, heat was radiating from the sand and I knew this was going to be a rough journey across.

"You guys ready?"

"Haha always!"

"Lets do this."

With that we took our first steps in the Blaze desert and lights started to glow beneath our feet.

"RUN it's a rune, it's a trap!" The rune started glowing and I felt all source of energy leave my body, I felt drained and couldn't stand. All three of us fell and a man slowly approached us. He had orange spiky hair, a tattoo of two blades crossing each other forming an X on his right shoulder, he had on a olive colored jacket, and two long strands of fabric flowing behind him, almost like a cape that's split in half. He was wearing boots that only military officers wore, he had two guns strapped to his belt, one on either side. He was wearing black biker gloves and wearing shades concealing his eyes.

The suns rays striking my eyes I couldn't get an accurate perception of his face. This man had an ominous aura and it radiates evil, I wonder what this man wanted with us.

"Your the brats he wanted me to catch? Man what a waste, they literally stepped right into the rune. What a bunch of amateurs!" This mans voice was commanding, firm like a military officer, his tone was harsh and rude. He kneeled so we were at eye level and he took off his shades, revealing dark blue eyes.

"We're not brats! We are strong mages and we will kick your ass!" Shouted Ren. He never loses confidence in himself and always show such bravery, I found a new type of respect towards him.

"Haha, kid you remind me of myself when I was a Mage, so foolish I like that. What's your name kid?

"Ren, my name is Ren, his name is Rai and she's Kiko. Now let me out so I can burn you down!"

"Haha Ren eh? Haha you got spunk, as a show of respect Ill tell you my name, I'm Onri Kichiku, head of military operations of the royal guards, district three."

"What? Royal guards? Aren't you guys supposed to be I don't know THE GOOD GUYS!!" I yelled in frustration. We are ruled by a king, he founded this land and thus became our ruler. I knew he had guards but I didn't know he had guards in the military!

"Wait...what do you mean of district three? Are there more?" Kiko asked innocently not as informed as others.

"Geez do they teach you brats anything? There are four total districts: district one, the paladins of the royal king, district two, the knights of the royal king, district three the military under the command of the royal king and district four, the court mages of the royal king. We are the royal guards, sworn to protect the king and withhold peace across the lands blah blah blah. I am the head commander of the third district, and am known for my ruthless behavior."

He gave us a sly grin, the look of a psycho. I looked to my left and noticed Kiko twirling three daggers behind her back, she was using wind magic to levitate and control the daggers. She could be our way out but she needs a distraction. "Pssssst Ren, hey Ren!" I whispered to Ren. Distract him we have a plan."

"What you brats mumbling about huh!

"Oh nothing just how lame Zane must be to hire you as a lacky!" exclaimed Ren.

"For once your right, Zane should have sent us a paladin if he really wanted to get rid of us. Instead he sent you to toy with us? What an insult!" I yelled. Kiko must have realized the plan and simply stayed quiet as we risked our lives all for a slight chance she could throw or even use those daggers.

"I should kill you, you insolent piece of shit! I don't know why Zane gave this job, I thought it would be easy! I'm going to simply bruise you, you little-' He was cut off as three daggers sliced across his face, the rune broke.

"Zephr fara!  I exclaimed. I used a spell that transformed us into three rays of lightning and we literally bolted away from Onri. When we landed (roughly) we scouted the area, the only thing in sight was sand.
