He gulped down beer from the red cup he had in his hands as we settled down on the soft sand by the water. He swung his head up as he swallowed. He mouthed gentle words to the sky.
“Which is prettier? The crescent moon or the full moon?”
His question intrigued me, caught me off guard. “Full.”
“I was hoping you’d say that,” he smiled. The moon made his perfect teeth look whiter than they already were.
He stretched his feet out towards the water, so that it washed up onto his toes. As the water came even closer, he pulled his knees up to his chin and looked out across the sea. This wasn't the same boy I had met. He was new, as if the night had revived him from his tiring day. He was calm and serene instead of crashing into waves and pounding his feet on the sand.
I listened to the crashing of waves out to sea and the noises of all the people I had met this summer, it would be all over in just a few hours. I just had to hang on for a few more hours.
His hand slid underneath my own and he laced his fingers in between mine. If only this could last forever, I thought to myself. If only I could have this summer every year. This is what I wanted, this is what I had been looking for and finally I had it.
He stopped and turned my chin so that I was facing him.
“I love you,” he whispered.
I breathed in deeply, "You can't mean that. How much could you possibly love me?"
He stopped and looked out to sea for only a second and without looking back at me he whispered, “To the moon.”
