Walking towards the water, I looked around. The blonde boy was off in a more secluded part of the beach and there were only a few couples on the shore. I walked up the shore a little bit away from the water to put my clothes down. I didn't have a bathing suit under my clothes but I still stripped down. I kept my shirt on even though it would soon be see-through and waded into the water.

Matt had turned toward the shore and began paddling to cath the wave. He was focused, forming with the ocean. I could see his biceps flexing as I jumped over the oncoming waves that would hit me hard against my stomach so that it soon felt bruised and sore. He saw me as he got up on his board. His focus was interrupted and the ocean took over. He tumbled on his side and his board flew up in the air. To my surprise, he came up laughing.

"I almost just died!" he laughed.

I dove under a wave and swam towards him. When I got to him, we both hung on either side of the surfboard. A little fluttery feeling arose in my stomach when he smiled at me.

"Hey," he said.

"Hi."

"What are you doing down here? Usually only the locals come down this way."

"So just because I left means I'm no longer a local?" I couldn't help but smile. He had a faint dimple on his left cheek that almost appeared when he grinned. He looked like he didn't really know what to say after that so I gave him a legitimate answer, "My mom lives around the corner."

"Oh, I see. Your lucky. I love this spot, the surfers don't over populate it because the waes aren't that challenging. I come down here a lot. My house is probably a mile off."

I smiled back at him and for a little while we were silent. It was a peaceful silence that said more than we could have with words.

It wasn't until we noticed we weren't talking that it became awkward.

"So did you hear about the party tonight?" I asked.

"Oh, near Moonlight? Yeah, that happens every year."

"Are you going?"

"I was thinking about it. Are you?" As he said this I thought I saw a glint of excitement in his eye, but it only lasted a second before it vanished once again. It was probably just the sun anyways.

"Well I was invited, and said I would go. I don't make promises that I don't keep."

"I guess I could go if you were gonna be there," he murmured. "Have you ever surfed?"

"Have I ever surfed," I mimicked. "I used to be one of the top ten in the state. I doubt you'd even recognize me on a surfboard."

"I'll have to see," he laughed. "How about tomorrow? Early morning?"

"How early?"

"Seven-ish?"

"You should know I'm not really a morning person"

"Well I'm the exact opposite"

Clinging to the surfboard a huge wave hit us from the side and flipped the board and both of us over. Flapping my arms around I felt Matt grip my waist. He had regained contro of the board and lifted me safely onto it I coughed up some water and felt his eyes on me

"Since when does the best surfer in the state not know how to swim?" He laughed at his own joke and I could tell he was trying to hold a smile back My face was hot and it definitely wasn't from the sun I could feel my cheeks grow redder nd redder. Back in New York some kids would ask me if I was okay, just because my face would get so red.
