It was a bright morning in Camelot. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and Merlin was up too late in the tavern the past night, currently oversleeping. Gauis opened his door with force and shouted at him.
"Merlin! Do you know what time it is? You were supposed to be up early to fetch me some herbs for the new medicines I'm experimenting with, so you could be on time to wake Arthur!" Merlin rolled over, barely blinking.
"What? ohh my head" He muttered in a slur of sleep. He settled back into his pillow and stirred no more. Gauis scoffed.
"Well then you'll just have to deal with Arthur when he's mad at you." Gauis shut the door, bringing down a pot or two on the table adjacent to the door frame. The sound of this clatter startled Merlin for good and his eyes shot open.
"I was supposed to write Arthur's speech he's delivering this morning!" Merlin jumped out of bed, stumbling on the blankets now on the floor. He bolted out of the chambers he shared with Gauis, barely putting his shoes on in the process. As he's running to Arthur's chambers, he runs into him (literally). They both tumble to the floor, with Merlin on top of the Prince.
"A-Arthur" Merlin stuttered. He rolled off him and onto the floor with a grunt. "I'm sorry, I was on my way to your chambers!" Arthur stood up and towered over Merlin still on the ground.
"Yes I can see that! Why were you so late? Another night in the tavern I expect?" Merlin sighed and looked away from the Prince's gorgeous eyes. Arthur grabbed Merlin's arm and lifted him with ease. "Now, since your late, Leaving me to fend for myself for breakfast, you get to write my speech ten times better as it would've been. Merlin rolled his eyes and slightly chuckled at the thought of Arthur, the Prince of Camelot, struggling to find breakfast. Arthur let go of Merlin's arm when they reached his royal chambers and they both entered. They were standing about one foot away from each other now.
"Arthur took a moment to study Merlin's features. His dark hair was ruffled, with a few strands falling to his eyebrows. He lacked his coat, probably forgot to grab it like the lovable idiot he was. His eyes caressed every inch of his slim figure, landing to his feet. His shoes were on the wrong feet. Arthur couldn't help but break out in laughter and turn away.
"What?" Merlin questioned, his traditional clueless voice ringing through Arthur's laugh.
"Merlin you idiot your shoes are on the wrong feet!" Merlin looked down and his cheeks flushed red when he realized that indeed he had messed up.
"Well you're not exactly perfect all the time!" Merlin tried to save himself from the embarrassment. This only continued to spark Arthur's laughter as he turned back to face Merlin again. Their eyes met, and Arthur's laugh died down. He raised his hand to Merlin's shoulder and spoke in a jokingly sincere voice.
"It's O.K., Merlin, there are people that can help you here." Merlin's expression changed as stern as that little face could go. He pushed Arthur's hand off his shoulder.
"Hey!" Merlin protested.  Arthur began laughing again and punched Merlin in the other shoulder.
"I'm just joking! Don't take it so hard Merlin!" Arthur's laughter died down again and they both stood there, just staring at each other for a few moments. In some way, they both knew that they had feelings for each other, and it was getting harder and harder to ignore them. Arthur stepped closer to his servant, giving him the cue to do the same.
"Arthur.." Merlin breathed, only to be interrupted by Arthur's finger on his lips.
"Shh, Merlin. Just this once, listen to me." He replaced his finger with his lips and Merlin's hand found his way to Arthur's neck...
