Edged with softness this familial day
loitering down muddy strewage of trails.
Sulk at heirloom binoculars askew,
but with the bare eye pick blackbirds' careen
running within tunnels of leafless thorn -
yellow-bill, dun mate theropodding* through
ward-halls of sharps .
Thin damp, veils, prevails.
Any raptor would be harrier low,
owl low now.
Seen only a buzzard sail,
clear days ago, wheeling, scanning stripped trees.
The mere's a drab cloth in mist, self-tailored.
Late January offers emptiness
only smallest of nettles could distress.

*Theropod dinosaurs are the dinosaurs birds evolved from (is the main theory). The blackbirds running not flying put me in mind of the little dinosaurs. It's just my humour.
