The next day, you walked into the pie shop, a box in your hand. It was sweetly wrapped, a withered and wrinkled bow at the top. Despite the torn paper and decayed bow, the box looked rather cute. In a peculiar way. You set it on the counter, humming, and decided to take a look outside. The large clock built into a tall building said it was about 7:53 in the morning, so you knew Mr.Todd would be down soon, as he usually made his stroll down at 8:00.
You continued humming your tune before you noticed the cellar door. You stepped towards it, taking note of the rust and grime. You grabbed the knob, the peeling steel jabbing into your hand.
"Ow," you muttered, pulling your hand away quickly. You shrugged, your hand bleeding for a moment. You wiped it off onto your clothes without thinking, and you grabbed a rag. You held it in your hand as you twisted the door handle. Locked.
Just then, your eyes gleamed with a string of hope. You had forgotten that when you bought the shop, the town gave you a ring of keys for all of the doors and drawers. You reached into your shirt, pulling out the keys. Just then, you heard the bell of the front door opening. You set the keys onto the counter.
You turned to see Sweeney. You smiled and pointed to the present on the counter.
"For you, love."You took note of his seemingly always dark eyes flashing for a moment, paired with the ghost of a smile.
He unwrapped the box, lifting the lid. He pulled out a little potted daisy. You smiled, watching his face twitch. You stared until you realized that he was smiling.
Mr.Todd was smiling.
Smiling.
He looked at you.
"This brings back many memories... Daisies..." He said."My Lucy's favorite... Probably Johanna's... I wish I was there to watch my girl grow up."
You tilted your head, the two of your faces sharing that same painful smile.
"Lucy's favorite, huh? My Jack brought me flowers on the day he proposed... daisies..."
You smiled as he looked up at you, making eye contact for a moment. He then coughed slightly, standing up straight, pretending the sentimental moment ceased to happen.
"I do thank you very much, (Y/N)." He said, brushing dust off of himself.
There was a pause, before you started up a casual conversation again.
"I think I should really go check out the cellar... Just to see what I'm working with," you said softly. Sweeney didn't hear you, so you shrugged, reaching onto the counter top to grab the keys. You furrowed your eyebrows as you picked them up, noticing that the rusty large key was missing.
"Sweeney," you asked.
"Have you perhaps seen the cellar key?"
"Uh..." he stammered.
"I believe there is one... in the cellar... Well- ah, I may have one somewhere," he said, fumbling around and patting his body.
"Nope," he concluded, shuffling on his feet.
You stared at him, giving a crooked smile.f
"Yeah, okay."
