Chapter 2: The Last Song
Rhiannon sat in her bedroom. She was writing.
She’d loved music since she was young, but recently music had taken a turn for her.
She lifted her guitar and began to play. As she played, she sang.
‘You used to call me your angel,
Now you’re living where they’re from.
I didn’t want you to go.
But I need you to know,
I miss you.
I miss your face.
I wish I’d see you smile.
But I know you’re in a better place.
In my heart I’ll forever treasure,
The memories we shared together.’
She sighed. “I miss you.” She whispered.
Remus knocked on the door. Rhiannon jumped and spun around.
“You ok?” Remus asked.
Rhiannon nodded. “I-I-I w-w-was j-j-ju-just. . .”
Remus held up his hand to stop her. “I was beautiful.” He told her.
Rhiannon sat down on her bed and Remus walked over and sat beside her.
“I really miss them.” She sobbed.
She hadn’t ever broken in front of Remus and Ivy. She hadn’t shown any signs of grieving at all. But Remus knew she had grieved in one way or another. It was natural. When an eleven year old lost both her parents, she wasn’t just ok with it.
Remus hugged her tightly.
“It’s not that I’m not grateful for what you’ve done for me. I am. It’s just. . .”
Remus put a finger to his lips.
“It’s ok for you to miss your parents. Did you think we’d be upset or angry that you missed them? You may not be ours by blood but we love you like a daughter.” Remus said and he pulled her into his side.
Rhiannon buried her face in his chest and cried.
After about half an hour, she was alright again.
“So do you like music?” Remus asked.
Rhiannon shrugged. “I suppose so.”
Remus smiled knowingly. “Do you write yourself?”
Rhiannon nodded.
“Can I see?” Remus asked.
Rhiannon nodded and handed him a notebook.
Remus opened the cover and read the first song.
“’In my heart I’ll forever treasure, the memories we shared together.’ Who do you think you were thinking of when you wrote that?” Remus asked.
“My dad. My mother and I never got on but my dad understood me better.” Rhiannon replied.
“Did you have a last song?” Remus asked.
Rhiannon shot him a questioning look.
“A song that your father and you used to listen to. It could be your favourite song. Or the last song you listened to.” Remus explained.
“We liked a lot of muggle bands. We liked Queen. And a muggle singer named Billy Joel.” Rhiannon said.
Remus nodded. “Ivy and Lily like him.”
“I suppose our favourite song was Piano Man by Billy Joel.” Rhiannon said.
Remus nodded. “There you go. That’s your last song then.”
Rhiannon smiled. “Thanks for looking after me.” She said burying her face in his chest.
He kissed the top of her head. “You’re very welcome.”
