The Tide Smothers Me Like A Blanket
I’ve never known the sun,
Yet all those who know me say
I sparkle
Like a new moon shining on the still ocean
While all around me clouds press in with
Leering smiles – wailing voices
Sharp.
The tide smothers me like a blanket
A blanket stitched with a deadman’s hair;
Made of carrion, devoid of warmth
I’ve never known the sun,
They say they see it in my smile
Shining between my teeth,
But I’m not so sure.
All I see when I look at myself,
Are tangles of ebony, squeezing around my soul,
My very essence –
Tainted
As I fight for breath
Breath to continue living
As with every second
I fall
Back down to the bleak darkness
That I thought for sure –
I would never visit again.
I’ve never known the sun.
