“Hey mom, I’m home!” Abigail yelled down the hall, hanging her coat up and dropping her bag on the floor by the door. “Where are you? I have some awesome news to tell you!”

Her mom poked her head out of her office “Hello Abs. I’m interested to hear all about it, why don’t we sit down at the table and discuss it?”

Abigail thought she could detect a tone of anxiety in her mother’s voice as she spoke, and she found her request a little strange but she brushed the feeling off, settling down at the table.

“Well, what’s the big news?” Her mom gestured for her to start.

Abigail could barely contain her excitement. “Brian asked Carli out!” Her eyes gleamed happily.

“Wow, that’s wonderful! I’ll bet she’s excited for that.” Her mom exclaimed.

Abigail searched her mother’s face, was she holding back? “Yea, I’m going over to her house in about a half a hour to help her pick out what to wear. That’s ok, right mom?”

            “Sure, sure honey,”

            She was definitely distracted.

“Mom, what’s up? Something on your mind?”

Her mom took a deep breath. “Well yes, I don’t know how to put this, but we’re moving.” She eyed her daughter nervously, waiting to see her reaction.

It took a moment for the words to sink into Abigail’s mind. “Wha-What?” She spluttered, maybe she had heard her wrong. “Could you repeat that please?”

            “We’re moving.”

“Ok, well you just mean like neighborhoods right?”

“No, I mean across the country.”

“Excuse me?” Abigail shrieked, her voice rising out of desperation and confusion. “Why?”

“A new position was offered in my company but it requires me to relocate. They’re offering double my current salary. It was an offer too good to pass up.”

“And I don’t get a say in this?” Abigail’s voice was filled with her disbelief. “This is where I belong; you can’t take me away from it!”

Her mother sighed. “I’m afraid it isn’t for you to say, we need the money.”

“I’m not moving. It’s just not fair! What about school and-” She gasped, sucking in her breath sharply “And mom, what about Carli?” She felt like crying, but her eyes were dry.

“There’s nothing I can do about it, we’re moving and that’s final, I’ve already made the arrangements and confirmed it with my boss. You can still talk to Carli, you know, call her, IM her-”

Abigail quickly stood up, her chair shooting out behind her, knocking a vase of flowers to the floor. Her hands were clenched into tight fists, her fingernails digging into her palm. “No. I don’t want to leave. I won’t. My life is here, I belong here! You can’t do this to me!” She was flat out yelling now.

“I know that this is hard for you, and it’s hard for me too, but we can get through it together. Think of it as a ‘fresh’ start.” Her voice was strained.
