The next morning dawned bright and sunny. Abigail was awoken by birdsong. The birds, with their beautiful plumage were tilting their heads to sky, singing their stories to the world. It made her feel even more miserable than she already did. How did they have the right to be so happy when she felt so lost, and alone? Her old life was gone, her friends were gone, and now, her dad was gone. Sure, he had left them, ruined her life in the process too, but he was still family, and Abigail would never stop loving him. So who was left? Her mom and Jake. No, not even Jake.

For a while Abigail just stared up at the ceiling, counting the cracks in the wall which she still hadn’t painted over. As her mind started to clear itself of the foggy thoughts of sleep, all the memories of yesterday came rushing back, and Abigail found herself blinking back tears. She didn’t think that she would have any more tears to cry after the funeral, but these spilled out hard and fast, adding to her already damp, tear-stained pillow. Glancing over at the alarm clock on her bedside table, she saw the caption her mother had given her and a fresh wave of tears overtook her. She shifted so that she was in a sitting position on the edge of her bed, burying her face in her hands. She considered asking her mother to stay home again, but she knew that her answer would be the same. And in a way, she agreed, she didn’t want to mope around the house with just her thoughts, her memory of her father burning a hole in her heart. Even more, wandering around the house with nothing to do would only be a constant reminder that this wasn’t her real home. Well, it was now, but it would never really be so in her heart.

It took Abigail a massive effort to drag herself out of bed and get dressed. With eyes red and puffy, she stumbled down the stairs, leaning heavily on the railing as she went. She couldn’t see for the tears that blurred her vision and the sleepless night she had spent screaming her troubles into her pillow was starting to affect her. Badly.

“Morning” Her mother’s voice echoed somewhere in her head.

            “Hey.” Abigail mumbled

“We’ll leave for school at 8:30, okay?” Her mother’s voice trembled.

“Sure.” She replied, stifling back sobs. This was not good, everything seemed to remind her of her dad and trigger her tears. This was going to be a long day.

                                                                      ~§~

The moment that Abigail stepped out of her mother’s car and waved a half-hearted goodbye, she made a beeline for the door. Today she just hoped that she would get through the day without doing two things. One, bawling her eyes out and making a fool of herself, and two, making Cindy even angrier than she already was. Abigail managed to make it to her locker without doing either of the two things. What an accomplishment she thought to herself, miserably kicking the locker door. Her first class was French. Great, a whole hour of the Cindy and Jake love fest. As she gathered her books together, she pulled her father’s caption, now slightly crumpled out of her pocket. She stared at the words that he had written, her heart beating dully. Immediately she felt hot tears well up as it always did when she read those words. She replaced it gently into her pocket and stood up slowly. Locker closed and eyes swimming, she turned towards the French class. Blind to the people around her, she hurried to class, the sooner her mind was occupied, the better.

When Abigail arrived, the door was already open; she entered and immediately made her way towards her desk. Her mind was in a state of oblivion, she didn’t notice until it was too late that Cindy was in her path. She crashed into her.
