Abigail got home before her mom and she immediately ran upstairs to her bedroom. She closed the door behind her and put her iPod in the dock, adjusting the volume so that it was merely light background music. She went to sit on her bed and read when she heard a faint whirring. It was coming from the direction of her desk, and only then did she realize she had left her laptop on all night and through the day. She went over to it and opened it, it was burning hot, she was afraid it would overheat but she wanted to check and see if Carli had replied to her e-mail yet. She opened her e-mail up and found that she had. Finally, something to turn this day around.
Hey there Abs,
The message read.
Sucks about everything. The laptop is kewl tho! I get wat you mean about ur mom and support and stuff….it’s hard…..but im still here, your Carli.
Abigail smiled, her foot tapping along with the beat of the song that was playing.
Did you know that in 2 days from now, it’ll be me and Brian’s 3-week anniversary? I’m so excited! He said he’s planning a special date and everything! :)
Anyway, hope ur first day @ ur skool went okay. Remember, I’ll be here for you forever.
As Abigail read those words, it stirred something, a memory within her. That’s right, her father’s caption. She hadn’t looked through that album since before the move and it pained her to think about it again, about her father.
I miss you so much too!
Love, Carli <3
Although Abigail still felt so alone, there was a sense of comfort knowing that Carli was never going to stop being her best friend. And maybe, just maybe, that could help her get through everything.
She wrote a quick reply:
Hey, it's so good to hear from you. Thanks for everything. About school, well let’s put it this way, it was HORRIBLE. Don’t forget to tell me all about your date!
Abigail.
She logged out of her e-mail and exited her Internet browser, turning off the laptop. She went back to her bed and started to read again when she heard her mom unlocking the front door.
“Hello honey!” Her mother called up, shrugging her coat off and hanging it on the rack by the door. “How was your first day?”
Here we go. Abigail thought. She hesitated before answering, her mind racing, debating whether she should tell the truth or not. She decided not. “Hey mom, it was fine….Yea, the people are really cool and everything, you know. My teachers are good, fair….” She racked her brains for what else to say. “Overall, the school’s not bad.” She hated lying, especially to her mom, but to tell her the truth would just make everything a thousand times worse.
“That’s great!” There was a hint of relief in her mother’s voice. “Are you doing homework up there?”
“Uh, yea.” Another lie.
“Ok, I’ll let you get back to it, I’m just going to make a few calls, dinner will be in an hour, then we can talk all about your day.”
