…
It’s a beautiful day with a clear blue sky. It's the weekend and my family and I all decide to go to the beach. My family consists of my dad, my older sister Victoria, my adopted sister Ava, and me Hazel. The bags are packed and the car is filled with sandwiches, coolers, and mats. Ava brought her sketchbook, pencils, camera with camera batteries. Victoria brought her sunglasses and sun tan lotion. I brought my volleyball and surfboard. As the car pulled out of the garage Ava pulled out her best drawing of Max. Max is a name of a bird that we found in our lemon tree. When he visits us we would always feed him and play with him. He was like our pet. Ava loved him so much, but he died last year. It seemed like she cried for weeks. Everyone except Victoria tried to comfort her but it didn’t quite work. One day I told her to draw a picture of him so she can always see Max everyday. She decided to give it a try. It took her a month to make it perfect and I can tell you, it looked beautiful. Right when she took the master piece out the devil, Victoria, snatched it and ripped it slowly as if every second it took to rip it, Ava’s heart was broken more and more. Ever since Ava was adopted Victoria always tortured her and I. She steals our food, rips our projects that we worked really hard on, and somehow convinces someone that we like to hate us. The car stopped and everyone except Ava stared at Victoria.
“What? She deserved it.” said Victoria with a evil grin crawling across her face.
“No she didn’t! Do you know how long it took her to draw that?! She loved that bird with all her heart.” I said while yelling at Victoria’s face, “She probably loved Max more than you!”
Dad turned back around and asked Victoria in a kind tone,”How did Ava deserve that?”
“She just deserved it.” mumbled Victoria.
I tried to comfort Ava by telling her,” It’s okay, Victoria is just jealous of your wonderful talent. Plus she's just a brat.”
Ava looked up and wiped her tears away. She slowly grabs another paper and started to draw without words but instead with tear filled eyes. The rest of the car ride was silent and soon we reached the beach. We found a spot on the warm sand and got ourselves comfortable. As soon as we are settled in we all split our ways. Ava grabbed out her camera and started to walk around. Victoria starts tanning and I decide to go surfing. After a while I came to shore to look for Ava. I found her by the palm trees sitting down looking at her camera screen. I sat near her and peeked over her shoulder to see what she was doing.
“You want to see?” asked Ava.
“Sure.” I replied.
As Ava passed me the camera I saw how beautiful the pictures were.
There was one picture with the tall palm trees blowing in the wind and another one with vibrant colors of the reef.
“Wow…” I breathed.
Ava’s cheeks turned a light pink as she was shyly smiling.
“How did you learn how to take such great pictures? I feel like you don't even have to take photography class unlike me.” I said.
Ava started to giggle and said,”I don't know. I just like to take pictures. I guess it comes naturally.”
“Well you really take amazing pictures. It's stunning!” I said as I gave Ava back her camera.
Ava continued to scroll through all of her pictures. I walked back to our spot to grab my volleyball to practice. After a while we packed up everything to go home after a day at the beach. Ava’s Max drawing continued to grow. Even though there is only part of the bird on the paper it looks like it could finish itself and pop out of the paper to fly free. It looks that realistic. Once we reached home I was so tired. After a shower I walked to the backyard to look at the beautiful mountains and to get fresh air. Sooner or later my eyes got heavy and I fell asleep. When I woke up I saw Ava walking around the flowers taking pictures.
“I wondered what she's going to do with all those pictures.” I thought to myself.
Victoria suddenly came outside. I hid behind the bench and stayed quiet so I could see what was going on.
“I thought I told you to do my homework for me!” Victoria yelled while she approached Ava.
I saw Ava stare at her with terror. Her legs started to tremble and her eyes looked full of fear.
Once Victoria reached Ava her face moved so that it was in front of Ava’s and said,“Go do my homework.” In an evil way.
Ava nodded in response and ran in the house holding her camera with care and trying hard not to show weakness by crying. Victoria ran her fingers across the flowers and picked one. She looks at it with care then smashes it in her hand. She reveals the smashed petals then they were sprinkled on the ground as the witch walked back inside. I came out of my hiding spot thinking how Victoria's personality is so different from mine. Maybe it wasn’t her personality. Maybe it was something that happened to her to make her feel this way. Maybe she crushed the flower to let out her anger. I just want to know what happened to the nice, kind, caring sister I knew.
~Flashback~
The last bell rang and I had to meet Victoria at the front. I exited the 6th grade building to head to the front. Once I reached the front I found Victoria waiting patiently for me.
“Hey.” I said with a smile on my face.
“You ready to go?” Victoria asked.
“Yup.”
We started to walk home and I tripped over a rock. I fell and I scraped my knee.
“Ouch it hurts.” I say in pain.
“Are you okay?” VIctoria asked while coming to my side to help me up. “Can you walk on your own?”
I tried to walk but there was sharp pains to my knee and I fell again. Victoria helped me up again and put my arm around her shoulder while she put her arm around me for support.
“Thanks Victoria. You’re the best.”
“Now let up continue our way home.”
We walked all the way home together.
~End of Flashback~
“I really miss her old self.” I whispered to myself.
After those thoughts I checked the time and it was 9:30 pm. I went back inside to go to sleep. As I was in bed I thought about all the good times I had with Victoria before she turned into a witch and I soon fell asleep again. The night turned to morning and everyone woke up to get ready for school. We all went to the same school, but Victoria is one grade older than both Ava and I. We walked to the bus stop and waited. The bus soon came and we got on. The bus ride is usually kinda boring but me and Ava talk about school and stuff. The bus pulled into the school and we got off the bus and we split from Victoria to meet our friends. As we walked I noticed Ava staring at a certain direction. I looked the way she looking was and saw a boy that looked like he gets in trouble a lot. He was hanging out with his friends and was wearing ripped jeans with a plain white tee and a hat lowered so that I couldn’t make out who it was.
“Hey who’s that?” I nudged Ava while giving her a I know you like him look. “ I never saw them before.” I added.
“N-no one” Ava said with a stutter.
I stopped walking and looked at her,”So what’s his name?”
“Why do you want to know?” questioned Ava.
“Well I did ask the question first.” I stated.
“Ugh, fine. His name is Youngjae, Choi Youngjae.” mumbled Ava.
I looked back at Youngjae,“He’s cute.”
“Hey!”, Ava said as she playfully pushed me,”He is soon to be mine.”
I laughed and said,”I was just joking around and I wish you luck but I think Victoria might steal him.”
Ava turned her focus back to him and let out a sigh.
“I know I have no chance with him but I can wish right.” She said.
We both continued to walk in silence. As we were approaching our friends Ava stopped me.
“Promise me you won’t tell anyone.” said Ava as she held out her pinky.
I smiled and hooked my pinky with Ava’s,“I promise.”
As the first bell rang we headed to class before the second bell rang. I said bye to Ava and headed to photography. As I sat in my assigned seat I saw someone I think I saw hanging out with Youngjae walking in to the door way. I never saw him around before. Now that I think about it I never saw Youngjae and those people he was hanging out at the school ever. There was a empty seat next to me and I hoped that he wouldn’t sit next to me. He went up to Mr. Shay and the teacher pointed to the seat next to me.
“WHAT THE HECK! OUT OF ALL THE EMPTY SEATS...” I thought in my head. “Do I look okay?! Do I have something in my teeth?”
He headed to the seat next to me and sat. He was REALLY cute. He had that similar bad boy look as Youngjae he looked nicer than him. I turnes and pretended like I was reading my book. He tapped me on the shoulder and I jumped a little.
“Oh sorry I didn’t mean to startle you.” he said,”I just wanted to say hi.”
He had a addictive voice...What the heck Hazel.
“No it’s ok. My name is Hazel Peterson.” I said while shaking his hand.
“My name is Mark Tuan.” He said in return.
“I never saw you around in school before.” I said trying to start a conversation so I can hear his voice again.
“Yeah I just came here from Korea with my friends.” He said with a smile.
Ugh that smile killed me...Again what the heck Hazel.
“Wow. Hawaii must be different for you guys.”
“Yeah, maybe you can show me around school.”
“S-sure.” I stuttered.
“Why was I stuttering like that?” I thought in my head.
Mr. Shay was explaining the next photography project that we were going to do. It was about portraits. He said that he was going to chose our partners for this project. I wasn’t really paying attention to the whole thing because I was couldn’t help myself but I started to stare at Mark. I made sure that I wasn’t staring for a long time because I didn’t want him to catch me looking. It would have been real embarrassing. The bell rang and I started to pack all my things so I can head to the next class. Mr. Shay came over to Mark and told him that he needed someone from this class to show him how to work the camera and to tell him the rules and so on. Once Mr. Shay was finished taking to Mark I was ready to head out but he stopped me outside the class.
“Hey could you show me how to work the camera and stuff?” He asked.
“Yeah no problem.” I replied as I started to walk again.
I noticed that Mark was walking like he didn't know where to. It was really awkward but I decided to help him out.
"Hey do u need help?" I asked kindly.
"Kinda. I really don't know where I'm going." He replied.
"Can I see your schedule?" I asked.
He handed me his schedule and I turned out we had mostly all of our classes together.
“I guess it turns out we have the most of the same classes together.” I said while giving a small laugh.
“Huh what a coincidence.” He said also laughing a little.
That laugh probably shot me. I thought I was going to die.
I showed him the way to matg class and we entered the class just in time so we weren’t late. Through the day we talked and got to learn a lot about each other. We both liked similar things. He is super kind, sweet, and smart. He also makes me laugh a lot. It turns out that his bad boy image is just a cover.
“Hey now that it is lunch do you want to sit with me and my friends?” Mark asked me being all shy. “Maybe you can meet them.”
“Can I bring my sister, Ava? I asked.
I didn’t want to leave Ava by herself.
“Sure.” Mark said with that killing smile.
I meet up with Ava and I told her about Mark and that we can sit by them at lunch.
“Hazel! He wants us to sit with him and his friends?” Ava whispered yelled.
“Yeah what’s the big idea?” I asked.
“Well you know that I kinda like Youngjae and plus they are becoming kinda popular from their looks.” she whispered.
“We’ll be fine Ava.” I said smiling at her.
We reached the cafe and we soon spotted Mark and Youngjae. Mark seemed to see us too.
“Hey guys over here.” He shouted
We reached them and they made room for us to sit down. I had Mark on my left and Ava on my right. I told Mark that I kinda knew Youngjae so he introduced me to the rest of his friends.
“Hey guys this my friend Hazel and her sister Ava.” Mark said
“Hey it’s nice to meet you both.” They all said together. Then they introduced themselves individually.
“I’m Jackson Wang.”
“I'm Choi Jinyoung but you can call me Junior for short.”
“I’m Kim Yugyeom.”
“I’m Im Jaebum and also JB.”
“And I’m BamBam, my real name is just too long.”
They all had that bad boy look but they were all surprisingly really nice and cute but Mark is the cutest. Jackson is like the clown, Youngjae is the smarts, Junior is the mom to take care of all of them. JB is like the cool one, BamBam is the little kid, Yugyeom is the extra kind one, and Mark is the quieter one. It feels like we became really good friends. They were really talented in dancing and singing. I took some dance classes but I wasn’t as good as them. Well I don't think so. After lunch we went on with the rest of our day. The last bell rang as a sign that school was over. Hallways got filled with students and I meet Ava to go to the bus. Ava and I was approaching bus stop when I saw a flyer. It said that there was an art competition coming up next month. Ava suddenly smiled and quickly searched up the competition. It seemed like she was very excited. We realized that the bus was already here. As we got on we saw our new friends at the back at the bus.
“Hey I didn’t know you guys were on this bus. You guys didn't catch it in the morning.” I said as I approached them.
“Oh hey Hazel.” Jackson said with a wave.
“Come sit with us.” BamBam said with a puppy dog face.
“Sure why not.” Ava replied with a giggle.
The rest of us laughed. I sat down by the empty seat by Mark and Ava sat next to Youngjae.
“Hey I’ll show you around tomorrow.” I told Mark as I sat.
“I can’t wait.” He said smiling.
That smile again. God dam. We all were talking stories and laughing at Jackson’s jokes as we went home. The whole way down Ava was writing down ideas for this competition.
“Hey what are you writing down?” asked Yugyeom.
“Oh I'm writing down ideas for this art competition coming up in a few months.” Ava said.
“She is very talented in art.” I added.
“Could we have a sneak peek of your artwork?” asked BamBam.
“Yeah I guess.” Ava replied smiling.
I was happy for her when she smiles because she hardly smiles at home. We said bye to our new group of friends as we got off at our bus stop. We told dad about the competition and that Ava wanted to participate.
“Finally, she’s going to realize how junk her art is.” Victoria said as she passed by.
“Ignore her.” I whispered loud enough so that Victoria could hear.
I heard Victoria scoff as she continued down the hall to her room.
“I wonder what’s her problem.” I said as I walked to my room.
I went straight to doing my homework since I had a lot to do. I finished it quite fast and was soon bored our of my mind. I went to my bed and grabbed my phone. I decided that I should text Mark.
[Me] Hey you finished all your homework?
~5 minutes later
[Mark] Yeah just finished it now. Whats up?
[Me] I was just really bored so I decided to txt you
[Mark] Ok what do you want to talk about?
Me and Mark texted almost the whole night. I feel like be are becoming really close friends quite fast. After our long text conversation I went to check on Ava.
I knocked on her door and entered,” Hey.”
“Hi.” she replied.
She was still writing ideas for the contest.
“Can I see?” I asked as I approached her by her bed.
As I sat Ava handed me the paper she was writing on.
“These are good ideas. I hope it goes well.” I said while handing back the papers and getting ready to leave the room but Ava asked me a question.
“So you and Mark how's it going?” she asked trying so hard to keep in her laugh.
“Umm I don’t have anything for him. We’re just friends.” I said calmly.
Truly inside I wanted to be more than friends but I didn't want to believe myself.
“Yeah right. I see you looking at Mark.” she said giving me a face.
“Okay maybe he’s kinda cute.” I confessed.
“Ha! See told you so.” Ava said laughing
“Hey! It’s not funny… well you stare at Youngjae.” I said trying to make a comeback.
“Stop trying to get back at me.” she said trying to catch her breath after laughing so hard.
After she said that I went out of the room and went outside to cool off a bit. I played some music and started to practice a combo that I learned this past week. I practiced till it got dark out and I went inside to grab something to eat. After I ate I washed up and got ready for bed. I was just lying in bed thinking about so many things. I was thinking about school, our new group of friends, Ava’s upcoming competition, and expectually Mark. His addicting voice, his deadly smile, and killer laugh. Ugh! Why Hazel! I can't feel any of this after what happened in the past.
~Flashback~
“Dad I’m heading out now.” I said before I left the house.
I was meeting Ramon for breakfast at the cafe. When I reached the cafe I didn't see him. He usually isn't late. I tried calling him but it when straight to voicemail. I was getting worried so I walked to his house to see if he didn't wake up or forgot to charge his phone. I turned the corner to his street when I saw him in his car making out with Victoria. I was in complete shock. He saw me and pushed Victoria off him and got out the car. I turned around and started to run. I could hear him yelling my name but I didn't turn around. I kept running not knowing where I was going. I ended up at the beach. I sat on the warm sand and let all my tears fall.
“Why? Why does this have to happen to me? Why did my sister have to hurt me like that? Did I do something wrong that made this happen?” I whispered to myself.
“WHY ME!” I screamed.
I continued to let the salty tears fall down my face. I never been this hurt before.
