Il nome nel riflesso

NB1: questa storia nasce come un'armonizzazione tra le vicende dei gemelli Amras e Amrod scritte ne Il Silmarillion e le modifiche di tali vicende riportate ne The Peoples of Middle-earth.

NB2: nel racconto faccio riferimento alle ultimissime modifiche di Tolkien sull'ordine di nascita dei figli di Fëanor, contenute nelle note de The Shibboleth of Fëanor (The Peoples of Middle-earth). Qui l'ordine di nascita di Amrod e Amras viene invertito e Amrod diviene l'ultimogenito di Fëanor (allo stesso modo, Curufin diviene più vecchio di Caranthir).

A questo proposito non è chiaro se anche i nomi paterni furono invertiti; in alcuni portali tolkieniani questo non avviene, ma a me sembra alquanto illogico che Amrod, ora ultimogenito, conservi il nome Pityafinwë ("piccolo Finwë"), invece di chiamarsi più coerentemente Telufinwë ("ultimo Finwë"), per cui ho deciso di invertire anche i nomi paterni.

Dunque,  sesto figlio di Fëanor è Amras (Pityafinwë Ambarussa), settimo è Amrod (Telufinwë Ambarto/Umbarto, prima anch'egli Ambarussa).

Per la comprensione della storia è importante ricordare che inizialmente Nerdanel diede ai gemelli lo stesso nome, ovvero Ambarussa.

Più tardi, su insistenza di Fëanor, decise di chiamare l'ultimogenito Umbarto ("il predestinato" o anche "il condannato"), ma Fëanor, infastidito da questo nome (che pure svelava il futuro del figlio), le chiese di cambiarlo; Nerdanel optò per Ambarto.

Nomi Quenya con corrispondenze Sindarin:

Pityafinwë (Pityo) Ambarussa è Amras*

Tyelkormo è Celegorm

Russandol è Maedhros

Moringotto è Morgoth

Elwë Singollo è Elu Thingol

Carnistir Morifinwë (Moryo) è Caranthir

Fëanáro è Fëanor

Curufinwë è Curufin

Findekáno è Fingon

Makalaurë è Maglor

Menelórë è un personaggio di mia invenzione che ho immaginato essere un capitano dei Fëanoriani.

(*) So che l'ultimo Tolkien vorrebbero il nome "Amras" corretto in "Amros", ma per evitare di creare ulteriore confusione ho optato per la prima e più accreditata sindarizzazione.

In the night Fëanor, filled with malice, aroused Curufin, and with him and a few of those most close to Fëanor in obedience he went to the ships and set them all aflame [...]
In the morning the host was mustered, but of Fëanor's seven sons only six were to be found. Then Ambarussa went pale with fear. 'Did you not then rouse Ambarussa my brother (whom you called Ambarto)?' he said. 'He would not come ashore to sleep (he said) in discomfort.' But it is thought (and no doubt Fëanor guessed this also) that it was in the mind of Ambarto to sail his ship back [?afterwards] and rejoin Nerdanel; for he had been much [?shocked] by the deed of his father.
'That ship I destroyed first,' said Fëanor (hiding his own dismay). 'Then rightly you gave the name to the youngest of your children,' said Ambarussa, 'and Umbarto "the Fated" was its true form. Fell and fey are you become.' And after that no one dared speak again to Fëanor of this matter.
