I can hear the bells

It all started with a bump. Just a little brush of their arms in a crowded hallway at school. Jonathan, being the clumsy teenager he was, had stumbled and nearly fell over. He regains his footing, and looks over his shoulder to see who it was that almost knocked him over. When he looks over, though, he's met with the prettiest of people, tall, blonde and with eyes so blue Jonathan could've sworn he was already drowning in.

The pretty boy looks at him curiously, before giggling, a big, bright smile stretching across his face. Jonathan can feel his heart pounding in his chest at the sight, so hard he's surprised nobody around him can hear. Whoever the pretty boy was, he was practically an angel in Jonathan's eyes. The whole world seemed a bit brighter now, almost as if he was glowing.

Suddenly there's a loud ring echoing across the hall, the bell for class ringing out, forcing Jonathan out of his trance. He takes a deep breath, giving the pretty mystery boy one last glance and a smile. To his delight, he waves back, and they part ways. Jonathan knows he's fucked- in every possible way, Jonathan is fucked thanks to the pretty boy who bumped into him in the hallway.

It isn't until three weeks later that Jonathan finds out his name. The boy's name is Bryce McQuaid, and he was about a year younger than Jonathan. A gem of a human being, with his stunning looks and even brighter personality. It was no wonder why he was so well known around school. Who wouldn't want to be friends with someone like Bryce?

Jonathan knew what he wanted. He didn't want to be just friends. He wanted to ask Bryce out. It was like love at first sight, almost, because all it took was one little touch and suddenly love’s knocking him out. It hit him like a ton of bricks, sending him down and with no way to recover.

Every time he tried to get close to Bryce, though, he found that it was nearly impossible to ever speak to the guy. With his bubbly personality, Bryce was making friends left and right despite being so damn new to their school. And it seemed like everyone was saying the exact same thing, always shaking their head at Jon and saying “A guy like him would never look your way.”

Well, it turns out that the joke was on them.

It had been a normal Thursday afternoon. Jonathan had been walking along, trying to head to his next class. A hand grabs the back of his hoodie, though, and quickly yanks him into a storage closet. Jonathan had been about to smack whoever had kidnapped him, but any anger or irritation within him vanished the moment he saw Bryce's face.

“B-Bryce? Hey! Hey, hey, um… What's going on?” Jonathan tries his best to keep his voice steady, but his heart is suddenly pounding furiously at the feeling of Bryce being so close to him. Bryce looks down at the floor for a moment, before shrugging and giving a tiny smile to him.

“I don't know, honestly. I just wanted to ask you something, you know?” Bryce shifts awkwardly in the tiny closet, before taking a deep breath and staring Jon straight in the eye. “I actually wanted to ask if you wanted to go out tomorrow night? You know… like a date? I mean, if you're open, of course.”

Jonathan's eyes widen in pure disbelief. Was this really happening? There was no way this was real. It had to be some cruel, cruel dream his lovesick mind made up, and any second now the bell would ring and Jonathan would be forced out of class. Only, there was no bell. It wasn't ringing.

This was real. Bryce McQuaid was asking him out on a date. The guy Jonathan has been so in love with is now in front of him, asking him out. Jonathan looks at him for a moment, feeling his face heat up under Bryce's gaze. He slowly grins, his same dorky grin, and nods his head. “Fuck yes! I'd- I'd totally go on a date with you!” Jonathan, in a flash of embarrassment, quickly calms himself and tries to act like he wasn't that eager for a date. “I mean… yeah. I'd love to.”
