Chapter 3; Missing You

I race to the door only to be faced with my 17 year old sister, Skye. She raises her eyebrows and shakes her head.

"What are you doing?"  She asks cautiously, folding her arms as if I'm about to say something like, 'guess what, I ate a puppy.'

"Nothing..." I tell her before I gently throw away my phone, with just enough force for it to land safely on my bed. I then glance back at my blinds, which are open to Lauren Cimorelli dancing  in her room before she flops back on her bed, giggling to herself.

"Spying on our neighbours?" She walking over to my window, looking into their house.

"No, why would you think that?" I ask and Skye shakes her head, her dark brown hair that is the same shade as mine drops down her back elegantly.

"Because Lauren is pretty." She replies and I feel my heart stop. I raise my eyebrows at her.

"Wha-"

"Just kidding. Calm down. You can't take a joke!" She laughs slapping her leg and I roll my eyes.  "Seriously, because you're friends with her." She tells me and I furrow my eyebrows together.

"I don't spy on my friends, Skye."

"Hmm, remember Keegan?"

"He was more than a friend."

"Then why are you spying on Lauren?"

"I'm not!"

"Sure."

"Seriously! I just saw her dancing, that's it!" I lie cracking my knuckles and Skye smirks.

"Okay, okay." She shoots her hands up in the air and raises her eyebrows at me. "By the way, dinner's ready."

---

"Seriously, I think my crush is kind of bluntly obvious." I tell Mindi after dinner and she laughs.

"Well you kind of talk about her all the time."  She replies and I glance out my window again just to see Lauren take her top off.

My jaw drops but then I snap back into reality.

"Crap." I whisper, closing my blinds.

What if she saw me getting changed like I just saw her? She probably would've been even more uncomfortable.

"What?"

"Lauren doesn't change her tops with her blinds closed." I reply, flopping down on my bed and I can hear Mindi giggle.

"Don't laugh at me! This crush is seriously not nice! Sure, she's beautiful and lovely and everything I've ever wanted but it hurts." I moan and I can almost hear Mindi frown. "Why must I crush on the straightest chick in the universe?" I ask and Mindi doesn't respond.

"Because you've always done that. Remember when you crushed on Jade in fifth grade and she didn't care about you and you found that attractive? Obviously, that's the same with Lauren." Mindi replies and I realize that she's a genius.

"Mindi, you must be the smartest person I've ever met."

"I know."

"Modest much?"

"That's me."

"Damn, I love you so much. I gotta go though. I'll talk to you tomorrow at school. Avoid Lauren with me?" I ask and she laughs.

"I don't even know her so that'll be easy."

"Okay, bye. Love you."

"Love you."

---

I close my eyes as she sits next to me in English.

"Can you not?" I spit and she looks genuinely hurt.

"What's up?"

"You are sitting next to me, that's what's up."

"You don't need to be mean, Flo."

I almost feel myself apologize but I choke it back and turn it into a cough. It hurts to talk to her that way but I need her to stay away from me.

I feel so bad for pushing her away but she has plenty of other friends that don't have major crushes on her.

"Sorry for whatever I did." She snaps picking up her books off of the desk and I raise my eyebrows as she walks away. I feel so ashamed. I love her so much.

This love is blowing me to places I've never been and those places are full of hurt that I never even wanted to experience.

"I'm sorry for loving you." I mutter as I stick my head down and I wait for the teacher.

---

"Flo!" I hear someone scream but I ignore it, keeping my head down as I walk the corridors. Trying to push past the annoying people that can't move faster.

I reach my locker dumping my books on the ground, but when I stand back up, I'm greeted with a familiar figure.

"What the heck is wrong with you today?!"

I look up only to see Lauren Cimorelli.

"Nothin'." I reply lazily, avoiding her eye-contact.

"Don't you dare say nothing! You're lying to me! I've only known you for a little while but I know the second you're nervous or lying or...Anything! So just tell me!" She replies and I laugh idiotically.

Love is stupid.

"The thing is Lauren, you really have no idea who I am."

"Then show me who you are!"

"If I could, I would!" I hiss arrogantly and she rolls her eyes.

"Whatever. I thought we were friends."

She walks off, her perfect brown hair bouncing as she goes.

"Lauren! Wait!" I shout but she doesn't stop or look back. "Please! Lauren! Please!"

Lauren is out of sight and my phone buzzes.

I sigh heavily only noticing that it's a text from someone who's called 'Laur <3' who is obviously Lauren.

'I heard you calling out for me, but if you really want to talk to me, meet me at the park after school.'

"I can't today." I lie before sighing heavily.

L - Liar.

F - No.

L - Fine. Don't talk to me.

F - Lauren please!

L - I'm giving you a choice, Flo. Talk to me now or not at all.

F - You're the one who walked away from me.

L - Well I didn't want you to see me cry.

I made her cry? Crap.

F - I'm sorry. Where are you?

L - At my locker. Come now. Before I change my mind about talking to you.

F - I'm on my way.

So much for avoiding her.
