Aspen's POV:
"Hey Dad." I glance up as Shane walked through the door with a flushed expression on his face. "Is everything okay?"

"No, Rick got shot at work, and he's in the hospital right now. I'm just gonna grab a few things, and then I'm going back to him." Shane went into his bedroom and started throwing things into a bag. "You gonna be okay for a while?"

"Yeah, I'll call Kelly and just tell her what happened." I went into my room as Shane shut the door and I heard the car start up. I picked up my phone and called Kelly, my best friend since kindergarten.

"This is Kelly."

"Hey Kelly, it's Aspen."

"Aspen! How are you?"

"My dad said Rick got shot at work today. He's at the hospital now." I laid down on my bed and stared up at the ceiling. "I don't know what to think, my dad and Rick have been best friends for forever. He's like my uncle. If he... I don't even want to think about if he wasn't here."

"Oh Aspen, don't think like that. I'm sure he'll be fine. You know Rick, he makes it through everything." She paused, "So how's Lori handling all of this?"

"Oh my gosh! I didn't even think about her! Well, I think she'll be okay. My dad went to the hospital, so she won't be alone." I thought about how hard it must be for her, and for Carl. That little boy might grow up without a father.

"Aspen? Hello? Earth to Aspen?"

"Sorry! What did you say? I zoned out a little bit there."

"Yeah, I could tell. What were you thinking about anyways?"

"I was just thinking about Carl and how hard it will be for him without his father."

"Woah there, you're making it sound like he's already dead! Aspen, he's still alive! He's just in the hospital! Rick is tough, he'll go through hell and back and still be standing! You need to snap out of your own head!"

I shook my head. "You're right Kel, I need to get out of there."

"Of course I'm right!" I could practically hear her smirking.

"You know what Kel? I think I'm going to see Rick. I think it would help me."

"Okay, but remember, he can survive anything."

"I'll remember. Bye Kel."

"Bye Aspen. By the way, Thomas was looking for you at school today."

"Thomas?" He was the hottest kid in school. The football captain that every girl wanted to date. "Why would he be looking for me?"

"I don't know, he just came up to me during Biology and asked if you were at school today. I said no, you were out with the flu."

In fact, I didn't go to school because I still had bruises on my face from the last time my dad had hit me. "Wait, the Thomas Woodward was looking for me today?" I giggled.

"Ugh. You lucky duck." Kelly laughed on the other end. "Have fun daydreaming while you visit Rick." I could practically hear her wink through the phone.

"Oh shut up." I chuckled.

"Bye Aspen."

"Bye Kel."

I heard the click and put down my phone. I grabbed my car keys and walked to the driveway.

Good, dad took the police car, mine is still here. I hopped into the front seat and turned the key.

"Well, here goes nothing."
