Chloe's POV
"Class, I would like to introduce you all to your new classmate." Miss Bustier had drawn attention to a boy with dark brown hair and blue eyes standing at the doorway with an awkward smile on his face. I snickered, watching him take hesitant steps forward, a hand shoved in his pocket as he waved. New meat, I thought with a smirk. Something to keep me occupied after daddy stopped answering my calls. "His name is Robert Matthews, an American exchange student. He will be here in place of Rose this term."
I heard a small sob. Juleka shielded her face with a book, slightly red and I managed to hold back an eye roll. So your best friend's gone, big whoop. Go hug a cactus. I whispered this to Sabrina, smiling with satisfaction when she let out a soft snicker. She didn't seem as bright as she usually was but I ignored it, my thoughts centred on the new boy. If he was anything like the other idiot boys at Francoise Dupont, he would probably end up having a crush on Lila Rossi. I felt a laugh try to force its way out of me at the thought of him having a crush on Marinette until I remembered that I hadn't gotten a single card for Valentine's day last year except a measly handwritten one from Sabrina and Kim hadn't bothered attempting to ask me to be his Valentine, no surprise there. I felt a knot form in my stomach and shook the thought away, thinking of next year's Valentine's day. It doesn't matter, next year will be better. It has to be.
He sat next to Juleka, sending her a small smile that she returned before turning his attention to the blackboard. His eyes roamed over the class nonchalantly, the boy was completely unaware of the surprise I had in store for him. I decided to wait until lunch to humiliate him. I wracked my brains through class for what to hurt him with. Studying him, he seemed reserved. But I knew better than to judge a book by its cover. He would be a tough nut to crack. I watched as Juleka introduced him to everyone as I ate my lunch, going through my phone for some time. I stood up finally and walked over to the American, folding my arms.
"Hello?" When he didn't respond, still immersed in a conversation with Nathaniel about some art project, I tapped him harshly. He jumped and spun around. Damn, he looks kinda cute up close- game face, Chlo. Geez!
"Oh, sorry. I didn't notice you." Excuse you? Can't believe I thought he was cute for a whole seven seconds, I'm literally impossible to miss! I tightened my hold on the strap of my bag and circled him, ignoring the eyebrow he rose. He wouldn't be confused for much longer.
"I find that hard to believe. Welcome to our school, Robert. I-" My voice dripped with sarcasm and venom as I prepared to strike.
"You're Chloe, aren't you?" I smiled at this comment and dusted some invisible dirt off my shoulder, grinning at the brunette.
"Why yes! The one and the only Chloe Bourgeois, daughter of the Mayor. You've heard about me in America?" I was quite pleased. To think, even the Americans knew of me and my greatness. Maybe he wasn't so bad after all.
"Actually no. I just heard about you now."
"Oh. Well... everyone loves me here so why wouldn't they talk about me?" He blinked twice, looking more confused than ever and shook his head slowly.
"Actually, it was more negative than positive-" Alya nudged him but he didn't respond. He seemed to be looking at me like I was a puzzle he was trying to solve. I rose an eyebrow, shaking my head with an amused laugh when in reality, I didn't find what he said hilarious in any way. Quite the opposite, actually.
"That's impossible."
"How so?"
"Everyone. Loves me." I stressed, my knuckles probably white from the firm grip I had on my white shoulder bag. He took a step back and looked around, a nervous smile on his face.
