Jo POV
Mal stood next to me, as we looked out over the island. This wasnt the one we lived on. It was much smaller, and crescent shaped. And all the clans in our pack were here, gaurding the eggs that had formed over the year. It's a that only happens once a year, when we come and help the new dragons hatch.
It apparently is alot easier than how I came. I just flew straight to my clan. It was cold and rocky and I felt like I was on fire but burning and just all around awful. Apparently this is the equivelent of going to sleep and waking up. Much easier.
Those twins I helped train, Cloe and Cleo were here too. They were down with a few other zipplebacks, in human form and watching a next of eggs with a green tint. New zipplebacks. We had been here all day and only a few had left to hatch. It was almost nightfall. The leaders of the clans, including my clans King Nikolai and Princess Anora..oh yeah, did I forget to mention? About 7 years ago on this day there was a storm. A huge dragon, who had to be at least 100 times my size flew at the island. It was slender, looked built for speed and had very strong armor. Before she could crush the poor new dragons, she shrunk down to human size.
And that's how we got our princess. Any dragon who is unique in the sense that they are the only one, or a member of an extrememly rare species can claim a spot in leadership. But thats also got its own set of rules. Rare breeds claim spots based on their size. Kings and Queens are can be anywhere from the size of a Gronkel to about 4 times my size. Alphas and Betas and giants, and about Anoras size. Anora is actually the first potential Alpha I've ever met. We dont tell her she can take over the pack though. She seems....a bit too eager to rule and a bit too close minded.
"Looks like all of them have almost hatched. We'll probably be gone by sunrise." Mal commented. Of course, the dragons in charge of caring for the new ones will stay back until they can transform into humans. Takes about 2 weeks to learn to control that skill. Malachi and I weren't in charge of that this year though.
"That'll be good I guess. Anora coming back with us?"
"I think Nik might want her to stay here and learn a bit more about this. He'll probably be the one who comes back with.." He was cut off by a loud screeching sound somewhere in the sky. All at once every dragon on the island snapped their head up to search the sky. With our human eyes, it was hard to see but you could just barely make out a form jetting quickly around the island. If we were in dragon mode we could see clearly but not like this. And honestly, our first instinct was just to protect the young.
It got quiet...no one dared breath. And then a fire ball came hurling at us. By us I mean Mal and I up on the cliff. "Jo! Look out!" He yelled, shoving me to the side. I fell and rolled over, thankfully only getting minor cuts and bruises but Mal took one to the shoulder. That had to hurt.
"SON OF A B****" He yelled, grabbing his burnt shoulder....Holy..How powerful was that blast? Normally nothing burns us! And then it got weird. A big black bullet looking thing dove straight past us and hit the ground...hard. Ow. THAT had to hurt. I scrambled to my feet instantly and rushed over to Mal. Avoiding his injured soldier, I helped him onto his back.
"You ok?"
"F***ing Peachy!" He yelled.
"Well someones rude when theyre in pain. What was that?"
"Well why dont you go find out?" He asked with an unimpressed face. I rolled my eyes and ran over to the unconcious figure in time to see it morph down to human size. Her charcoal black hair was the first thing I noticed. Then there was the fact that she looked almost exactly like a certain princess I know......
