“I can’t believe this is actually happening.” you breathed in astonishment as you lay in the middle of the field. Little yellow flowers and tall grasses surrounded you, and a bright blue sky without a single cloud encompassed the Earth.

“Surreal, isn’t it?” John answered as you both looked to the sky.

Tomorrow you were to be wed. His name was Isaac Flousey. Your parents had both introduced you, and arranged a marriage. At first you were opposed. You would like to have your own say in who you spent the rest of your days with. But over time, you began to like Isaac. He was charming, intelligent, and most importantly, approved by your parents. You had convinced yourself to like him for the sake of your family.

Now, the day before the wedding, you were spending your last few moments with your best friend from your childhood friend, John Laurens. You were laying in a field near your childhood home, recalling memories of your youth and coming to terms with the fact that you would never be able to see him again like this after tomorrow. In these times, a married woman was not allowed to be alone with a man other than her spouse.

“Remember when we used to pretend to be soldiers?” he suddenly asked, a grin spreading across his face as he recalled.

You smiled back, recalling little Laurens galloping around the terrain on his wooden horse stick, his father’s captain hat kept falling over his eyes as he ran. You trotted next to him, and both your hands were stretched out in front of you, forming your fingers to look like guns.

“Bang, bang, BANG!” you’d both mime, as you shot at invisible enemies and monsters. As the invisible army drew closer, or the fictional monster grew in size, John would always bravely step in front of you, brandishing his finger guns to protect you and demolish any oncoming threat.

“BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!” he would shout, wildly aiming at the threat(s).

Then when you both were finally safe, he would take off his captain hat, turn to you and kiss your hand.

“You are safe now, my lady.” he’d proclaim.

“My hero!” you exclaimed, beaming with pride and admiration.

You couldn’t help but smile as you recollected the memories. My God, you two must have looked so adorable.

“It’s hard to believe that was so long ago…” you said, finally answering John’s question.

“And look at me now,” he joked.

“Yes, it must have been excellent Colonel practice, dear Laurens.” you giggled.

Laurens was now a colonel of the revolution, a leader and risk-taker in his own right.

“Of course, not to mention my training was always propelled by the fact that I had a huge crush on you.” he admitted.

“Oh?”

“Still do.” he said as he turned to you and smiled.

You laughed.

“Very funny, John. It’s a bit late for that now, no?” you said, simply brushing off the comment as a joke.

John did not respond.

You both laid in silence.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” he suddenly asked.

“What? Marry Isaac?”

“Yes.”

“Why not?”

He sat up.

“Why not? ‘Why not’ is the best reason you have to marry this man?” he asked, an odd frustration growing in his voice.
