Cafeteria, mid lunch period.
After Derek made a scene he ran off without a word leaving Brandon and I confused. "How did he know about that?" I was trying to open a package of mayonnaise.
"I'm not sure but it scares me," Brandon said taking the mayonnaise away from me. "Why did he run off?"
I shook my head. "I'm not so sure."
"God damn it!" He threw the mayonnaise packet in the nearest trash can and got me a different one at the salad bar we were sitting near. "Anyway, I'm going to play basketball for the rest of lunch. Later."
With a small wave, he was on the way to the gym. Unsure where Millicent was, I decided to head to the library to research a little bit about that headache. The library was on the second floor and had decorations up for Halloween, already, and the computer lab was off to the right through some double doors. I sat down at the nearest computer and turned down the brightness. The first thing I searched was 'Sharp headaches' all I got were websites about migraines. Next, I searched 'A headache lasting a minute' the results were things about having water in your ear or hanging upside down. I was beginning to run out of ideas until I searched 'Headaches at the time of birth' the very last result was a post written three years ago:
My name is Steven, I just experienced the worst headache of my life today at the exact minute I turned seventeen. The pain was unlike anything I have ever felt.
Though the post was small and only two sentences I printed it out and signed out of the computer. Before I could get all the way down the stairs I ran into Kyle. "Harmony!"
I casually slid the article behind my back. "Hey! What's up?"
"I was looking for you actually." He glanced at my arms as though he was trying to see my hands.
"Really? Why?"
"Well last time I saw you, you were in pain."
"That? Yeah, I'm fine."
He looked at me suspiciously.
"I'm sorry, I'm looking for my brother actually."
"Can we talk later then?"
I nodded my head.
"Okay, it's a date! Before you deny it I'm picking you up at eight."
I smiled. "Fine." Why me?
I was rushing down the stairs and came to a screeching halt. "Date?" The people walking by stared at me talking to myself on the stairs. Ignoring them I was now on a mission to find Millicent. That is until the bell rang.
Inside Derek's car an hour before schools out.
"From here on out Derek, you are his mentor." Vincent had his dark sunglasses on like usual.
A bead of sweat fell from Derek's brow. "I know that!"
"You seem a bit nervous today." He removed his glasses revealing his cold dark eyes.
"I'm fine I just don't like these meetings in the parking lot."
"Keep me informed Derek."
Vincent was gone and Derek was left smacking his steering wheel with the palms of his hands.
The front of the school. 3:00
Finally, school was over and I was standing next to the big carrotwood tree waiting for Millicent. Derek was weirdly sitting in his truck and Brandon was with some friends in the parking lot. The sun was blazing and I was melting. Millicent walked outside while arguing with her little sister. "I don't care if you want a ride! You have been a bitch all day! Go get on the bus!" Kristy stormed off toward the buses and Millicent smiled at me. "Hey! Sorry, I'm late...Sister drama."
