TWELVE YEARS AGO................................
"You're so luck Jenny, Sky is so hot." Mallory beamed as the pair walked across the yard towards the large indoor pool.
Jenny glanced at her new, older brother Sky who was doing laps in the pool. Two of his idiot friends were in the deeper end splashing water at each other aggressively. Jenny was sixteen that summer and her father had just married Rosie, a sweet woman with a nineteen year old son named Sky. Ever since the wedding four months ago Jenny's friends regularly came over to oogle her step-brother.
"I heard when he was in school he choked out a teacher," Mallory whispered.
"Why is that attractive exactly?" Jenny asked.
"He's a total bad ass, why is that not attractive?" Mallory shot back.
Jenny shook her head as they reach the lawn chairs and she stretched out on one, enjoying the sunshine. Mallory had wore a bikini, but then she had the body for it. Jenny preferred to sun tan in loose shorts and a tank top. She was laying back enjoying the sunshine when a dark shadow fell over her, she opened her eyes to see a tall, shirtless, soaking wet, Sky.
"You're on my towel," He said.
"Oh, sorry." She quickly stood and he snatched his towel off the chair.
"Hi, I'm Mallory." her friend stood offering him her hand.
"Yeah, I know," he said, looking at her quizzically.
Mallory laughed and her cheeks turned a deep shade of red before collapsing back on her own chair. Jenny shook her head as Sky walked back towards the house. She noticed his two friends approaching from the side.
"Hey ladies, you gonna join us for a swim?" The first one asked.
"Oh, no, thank you." Jenny said.
"Come on, just a quick one won't hurt."
"No...that's okay," She stammered.
"Let's just go in," Mallory offered.
Jenny gave a quick nod, pushing to her feet. The pair started for the house just as Sky walked back out, pulling on a black t-shirt.
"There a problem?" He called across the yard.
"Nah, man." The second guy called back.
Jenny was crossing the yard with Mallory next to her when the first one gave her a shove into the deep end of the pool. She let out a loud scream and Mallory lunged to try and catch her just as the second guy caught her around the waist preventing her from helping.
Jenny floundered and tried to touch bottom but was too short, too panicked and no matted how she struggled couldn't breath the surface. She could hear muffled screams coming from the lawn.
"She can't swim!" Mallory cried.
For just an instant she managed to break the surface and tried to take a desperate breath, inhaling water she began to choke before once again sinking under.
A second later she felt strong arms around her waist and she re-surfaced, taking in deep, greedy breaths. She coughed up some water and as she turned her head slightly caught a strong, tan forearm, Sky firmly holding her against him as he pulled her to the edge of the pool.
She was shaking but with his help managed to pull herself out of the pool and roll into the grass, still gasping for air and coughing. She saw him hoist himself out of the water and approach where his two friends stood. One punch easily knocked out the first one who had pushed her and the second one released Mallory in fear putting up his hands.
"Hey come on man it was a joke, we didn't know she couldn't swim." He stammered.
"You could have killed her, what the hell is wrong with you?!" Sky demanded.
Mallory collapsed on the grass next to Jenny pulling her into her arms and holding her close.
"I'm okay," Jenny managed.
"Get out of my house and don't come back here!" Sky yelled.
"Your house? Man, this is her daddy's house. That little rich bitch lives here not you, don't go thinking because you live in a palace you're king." The friend shot back.
"I said get out!"
By now the first friend was regaining consciousness and the second one rushed to pull him to his feet.
"You're still trash, Sky. Just like us," The second one said as the pair hurried across the yard, he mostly supporting the first one.
Sky shook his head as he watched them go then turned back to Mallory and Jenny. Jenny was suddenly cold and shaking like a leaf. She glanced up at him through the long dark strands of soaked hair. Since he and his mother moved in they'd managed to avoid being alone for more than a few seconds and he'd barley spoken a hundred words to her.
"Are you hurt?" He asked, turning to Mallory.
"N....no." She managed.
He moved closer and Jenny winced away, lifting her arm as a form of protection. He roughly grabbed her arm, jerking her to her feet before catching her upper arms in his grip.
"Are you hurt?" He asked.
"No...I....I'm fine."
"Are you sure?" He pushed her hair from her face.
"Yes....I'm sure."
He took her hands, turning them and examining her arms. Once he was satisfied she wasn't hurt he simply walked away leaving Jenny and Mallory standing by the pool.
