KAIA's POV
Nadia grabbed her ax and picked it under with her muscles. Her triceps flexed as she took a swing with both hands planted on the wooden grip. Her hard swing could barely dent the glass, must have been made with obsidian. She gritted her teeth as she lifted the heavy object and swung again. A slightly weaker one. The glass broke slightly, a hole about an inch big. Nadia's chest breathed in heavily. Her gills moved with hydrogen and oxygen moving into her chest. She gripped the ax and swung her ax a few times, not hitting the glass.
I just realized how smart Nadia is. When I first met her, I thought she was a dumb pretty girl that was nice. But I was wrong. There are brains under the pretty face of hers.
Breaking the glass in its entirety, Nadia swung the ax with all the power in her body.
She swam into the broken window, her purple tail glittering in the sunshine.
She signaled me to follow as I watched the broken glass fall to the observers of the castle on the sea floor.
I took a shallow breath as I arched my back to enter the castle. Nadia ushered me to be quick, so I was. Too quick.
The remains of the window stabbed my insides. I moaned from the stabbing pain and I cried for help. No one heard me, except Nadia.
In the moment of the cold cut, I knew what would happen. A megalodon shark could smell my blood, even from miles away. It would race through the kingdom and swim straight to me. The creature would eat me, and maybe Nadia as well. Possibly the whole kingdom would be eaten.
At least none of us would have to deal with being tested on for the rest of our lives.
I was right. The giant, prehistoric creature pounded through the kingdom. I looked back at it and squealed. It wasn't close, but it was fast. It didn't even think about eating any other mermaid, only me. The huge shark looked me straight in the eye as I whipped my concentration back to the window.
The megalodon was coming closer, swimming like it was swimming for its life. I wiggled my body through the glass slowly to not hurt myself again. The whole was small, only Nadia's waist could slip through it. I sucked in my own waist as a grasped the glass of the window on the side of the castle, and inching my body into the whole. Little by little less of my tail was outside of the castle. When I saw the shark approach, I was almost through the hole. I wiggled inside as the shark banged on the remains of the window.
Hand in hand, Nadia and I swam as fast as dolphins down the long hall. The shark bit the window, trying to break the glass. Our eyes met. The shark had 'kill' written is its eyes. As I turned back to the direction of the door, I noticed the shark banging the glass with its nose, thirsty for our blood. The door got closer, and time seemed to slow along with my body.
NADIA'S POV
I turned around facing the shark. My heart beat to the beat of my voice telling me to help the sharks mermaid murderous mind. I know the sharks need food, but they can eat things other than mermaids with a family or friends and a happy life. I just hate to see that go away. I knew what I had to do to save us. I think I can stop the shark. I swam down the long, wide hallway to the sound of shattering glass. It's in.
I'm good with animals. I've always been. Ever since I rode my horse the first time back on land, I have felt a connection with animals. It almost seemed like I could- talk to them, sort of.
The megalodon gritted his bloody teeth at me. I looked back at Kaia and smiled through a chattering jaw. I turned back to the shark and smile a true, genuine smile at it. It didn't sense my bolting fear. I petted his nose and stared into its black pupils.
