My eyes fluttered open and I rubbed my eyes open and kept it that way. I turned to face my mum, but she still wasn't here, panic-stricken, I started to cry, was I not good enough for her, was I just always in her way? A voice sneered in my head, telling me things that my heart knew was a lie but the voice got stronger by the minute, overpowering my good ones, that was my time to break down. I opened the car door and stepped onto the now much busier streets, my nose cringed at the smell of the city, fumes and factory oil smells dug into my lungs and I started to choke. When my coughing stopped, I closed the car door and locked it. I didn't know where I was going, but one thing for sure was that I was going to try find my mum and if I got lost, I would at least have my bag full of my stuff. I wandered through the streets, bumping onto people and crashing into dogs that wanted to tear me apart. A while later, a man in a black cab drove up and stopped right next to me, I looked up and the guy was offering me a lolly and a ride, then I ran, I sprinted towards the centre of the crowd and I watched the vehicle drive off. I kept running until I bumped into a hard suitcase, the next thing I knew, I was on the ground and then I blacked out.

When I woke up, my eyesight was blurry and I heard voices in the background, I frowned, I felt a bed under me- weird. I looked forward and saw a red haired young woman sit in front of me, smiling, the smile was a warm smile which I liked, so I smiled back. Then the lady spoke "Can you move?" The lady asked as she handed me a glass of water. I took the water and sat up "I guess,"I replied. "Excuse me but, where am I," I wondered.

"Safe, in my house, I was coming home from wok when I saw you on the pavement with a bleeding head," the woman explained. Bleeding? I felt my forehead with my hand and soon enough I did find some blood, it must have been quite a bash. "I noted that you were lost, would you like me to phone your mother?"said the lady, "Oh and also, I'm Cani- Cani Carter," she said

"Thanks Mrs.Carter but, I cant find my mum, she was gone since last night so...yeah,"I said. After I explained to her about everything that happened, she frowned, a look of fear was plastered onto her face "Emily, what was your mothers name?" she asked, there was slight sign of worry in her voice. "My mothers name is Valerie conchshell,"I said proudly. With that all the happiness from Cani's face was gone as she passed me a newspaper "Read the front page,"she told me. I took the newspaper slowly and looked at the front page, obviously I couldnt read at that age so I asked "Could you please read it for me?" Cani nodded and started to tell me what it said. When she stopped reading I sat there, stunned. I gulped once or twice before I started screaming mentally, then physically- "My mums dead???!!!" I couldn't believe it but it was on the page alright and apparantly someone or as they said, something had killed her on the edge of the pier.

Heartbroken, that's what I was.

I looked at Cani, dumbfounded, tears welled up in my eyes and then flowed out and Cani wiped them off gently. "I'm so sorry, do you have a father?" Cani asked.

"No," I croaked out, this was the worst day of my life, no one could ever replace my parents, where am I to live now? But Cani answered my last question, it was though she read my mind. "I don't expect you to say yes straight away but, would you like to live with me? You will have company while I'm at work, I have a girl named Lottie, both of her parents dumped her by my doorstep, so would you like me to take care of you?" Cani asked. I started to stutter, I wasn't quite sure, but where else would I go? "U-um sure, I guess,"I answered. Cani's was so happy, her smile was warmer than a hot summers day, I smiled back. "Would you like breakfast? Then later when Lottie comes back from school you can meet her,"said Cani.

"School? Will I have to go to school?"I asked

"Of course, when you ready though I'll give you time to settle down," Cani told me, handing me a bowl of cereal. I said thank you and started eating, this was going to take some time to get used to.

It was 3:00 in the afternoon and Cani told me that Lottie should be coming home soon, when the bus drops her off, I was actually quite excited, I've never had anyone to play with my whole life I guess..My mother had said it was to dangerous-weird. I hoped she'd be nice, I rolled my eyes at myself, of course she'd be nice, Cani looks after her. "She'll really like you," smiled Cani, wiping the table and scrubbing gently at the dishes. I sighed, all I have to do I'd wait.

I was helping Cani with the dishes when the door swung open and was closed properly by a girl my age, I just realized, I was shy. The girl named Lottie placed her bag on the table, she still hasn't noticed me. When she turned round, I saw her face.

Lottie smiled at me and it was time to explain to her what was happening, I shot a smile back, my first friend.... I hope.
