Luke packed his school bag with notebooks, his phone and some re-touching stuff...basically some pins, clips, comb, concealer and the foundation. He went out of the room, locked the door behind him. He was planning on going straight to his room assignment but his mind changed as soon as he saw the girls in their pajamas walking in groups. He needed to know where they were going.
Luke cleared his throat, "Uhm, excuse me?"
The nearest group of girls stopped and looked at him.
"Where are you going?"
"To the dinner hall. It's breakfast" A Chinese girl in light pink pajamas answered brightly.
"Oh... may I come?"
"Of course. You must be new here. I'm Cheryl, this is Xianli, and Nicole." a girl as tall as him replied.
The girl in thick glasses behind Xianli waved shyly.
"Lu---cy. Lucy Carter. I transferred yesterday..." He had almost slipped. It was his dad's fault for making his undercover name sound like his name.
Cheryl grabbed Luke's hand, causing the boy's eyes to widen for a second.
"Come with us. You look really hungry." Cheryl grinned, pulling him along.
Since everyone else used the elevator, the girls---and Luke-- used the stairs and went to the first floor. The dinner hall was two-thirds of the entire first floor, it was painted cream. Yellow drapes were ribboned on the sides of the long windows...the sun had just risen. Girls who woke too early were already seated on their usual tables.
"That's our table, from today on, you'll be sitting there every meal, got that?" Cheryl pointed on a table at the corner of the hall.
Luke nodded quietly, but deep down being with his new friends meant working harder, acting harder. It would have been better if he became an outcast...and no one would see him accidentally slip to his guy self.
"You and Nicole are going to get along pretty well," Xianli giggled.
The girls...and Luke sat on their round table. One of the waitresses approached with cart of food. Luke took some omelette and bread, Xianli took noodles, Nicole took pancakes and Cheryl took salad. Only Luke stopped to pray, before eating. All of them had mango juice.
"Sooo... what's your room number?" Cheryl asked after they finished their breakfast.
"302...I think..." Luke replied quietly.
"Omigosh! Then Miss Davenport is your roommate!" Cheryl and Xianli chorused, their hands covering their mouths.
"What's with the formality? Why do you call her with her family name?"
"Didn't you know? She's like the daughter of the Davenports. One of the top 5 riches students in this school. She's like a princess. Nobody had ever been her friend." Cheryl's eyes were wide, her face only a few inches away from Luke's.
"And, rumor says that the Davenports paid for the whole room so she wouldn't have to share the room with anyone. Solo-ing a room is only allowed for highschool students. She's never had any roommate since she transferred here," Xianli added, her eyes having the same intensity as Cheryl's stare.
"So?"
"So, that means, you're as rich as her." Cheryl and Xianli chorused.
"I'm not rich," Luke disagreed. Dad is.
"Uhm maybe it's the only vacant room," Nicole added thoughtfully.
"Yeah," Luke agreed.
"No way. Lucy, come on, spill it. You're rich. Richer. Richer than us." Cheryl shook her head.
"Whatever. I don't even know how much property your family owns, how can you say I'm richer?" Luke shook his head in disbelief.
"Because...." Cheryl's voice trailed off. Her eyes caught Bianca. And so did everybody else.
The room suddenly became quiet, all eyes were on the girl who just entered the dinner hall. She was already wearing her uniform, as usual. She took a plate of salad from the food cart and settled on an empty table. The girls looked away and there was a quiet exchange of whispers.
"What on Earth was that all about?" Luke asked.
"We told you. She's royalty. She's a princess here." Cheryl answered.
The girls on Luke's table sighed.
"Let's go back to our rooms, we still need to shower," Cheryl said, standing up.
"Yeaah. You guys go ahead. I'm already in my uniform, if you didn't notice."
"Oh. Oh yeah. See you by lunch then. Bye Lucy!" Cheryl and Xianli waved goodbye.
Nicole bowed slightly at Luke before following the two. She's really different from those two. Wonder why she's in that trio....
Luke waited for the girls to be out of sight before he stood up and walked to Bianca's table.
Bianca felt Luke's presence and looked up from her salad. She was almost done eating.
"What do you want, Lucy."
"Nothing. Nothing at all," Luke smiled, sitting next to her.
"Leave me alone, please?"
"I was just going to ask you something about my schedule...." Luke pretended to pull out something from his bag.
Bianca took a deep breath, annoyed.
"It's okay, I could wait..." Luke said, instinctively whistling after his last word.
"Shut up Luke. People will stare at you." Bianca mumbled.
"I told you. It's Lu-cy. Lucy. And who are you to tell me that. Everyone was staring at you when you entered." Being called Luke made him feel wrong. As if Bianca knew he was her bodyguard in a wig.
"Just let me finish my salad, please?"
"Fine. Fine." he looked away and observed the remaining girls in the hall.
Luke waited for Bianca to finish her salad. He knew why someone would kidnap her, if it wasn't just for the money. She clearly had attitude problems. It was either people envied her or hated her. Maybe if he could teach her how to be human the kidnapper's would change their minds. And then he'd be free.
