With Chris' words ringing in his ears, William walked into the crowded party. Immediately, he was enveloped by some of his closest friends he'd had to leave behind in order to escape his past.
"I told you coming here would be worth it," Chris yelled into his ear as they engaged in a back slapping hug. Taking a much needed swig from the beer bottle Chris had handed him, William looked around at the sea of faces surrounding him.
Some new, some old, but not a single one matched the face of the girl whose love had fixed him and then shattered him. Scolding himself for that momentary weakness, he put up his infamous walls once again, blocking out any and every thought of Noora.
"Hey, come here, I want you to meet some people." Saying so, Chris grabbed him by his shoulders and pulled him into the crowd that earlier he would have found intensely intoxicating but now was giving him a mild headache.
Refusing to feel old, he took another gulp of the cold beer and was finally satisfied to feel that familiar buzz settling in. Soon he found himself being introduced to some new guys, some new girls, most of whom were very much interested in letting him rock their world. He hesitated, their pungent perfume an instant turn off.
Christ! How he missed that appealing citrus perfume of Noora's that would refresh and arouse him instantly and simultaneously.
"Bro, Anna and Astrid here wanted to help you relax and enjoy, seeing how tightly strung you are," Chris whispered into his ear as he held onto a blonde girl who was currently licking his neck like a cat deprived of milk.
Knowing the only relaxation these girls were talking about was them three in a room in which he'd probably get the best blowjob of his life, and then some. Where earlier, he'd be jumping on this opportunity to let out some steam, now, in this moment surrounded by people who knew him as the King of the Penetrators, the guy who didn't let anyone faze him, walked his own path, and literally gave no fucks what others thought, he felt weirdly....pressured.
It was an odd feeling. He always felt confident in any and every situation, dominance and a take charge attitude ran in his blood, so feeling pressured was a very unsettling experience. He was again at crossroads, let these girls make him forget his troubles or go on living in this in between, that had become his life. before he could make up his mind, Anna (or was it Astrid?), was leading him through the writhing crowd. The flashing lights made it difficult to see but he could feel when they collided with someone.
"Oh God! I'm so sorr--," William couldn't believe his own eyes. As his eyes moved over Noora, as if for the first time, his heart skipped a beat, no point bullshitting there.
And when her sea green eyes, eyes he couldn't get the fuck out of his head, however much he tried (and he'd tried a lot), eyes that he missed seeing the first thing in the morning and the last thing before he went to sleep, looked right into his, he felt...anger.
A hell lot of it, in fact. Even though he could feel one of the girls running her hand down his biceps, and the other holding onto his waist like a creeper, he didn't do anything to resist their hands. Maybe that was petty, maybe that was being cruel, more so because he could see the hurt shining in those mesmerizing eyes, yet he didn't do anything. He let the boiling anger consume him, let the bitterness of her betrayal spread through his heart and mind and that's why with indifference coloring his tone, he simply said,
"Noora."
The coldness of his voice and the way he looked at her, so accusingly, so not-in-love, split her heart in two. The pep talks, Eva's determined face, her own damn mind kept screaming at her to not show hurt she was. To remember that he had lost the privilege of seeing her vulnerability, yet, the emotions were too much.
In that moment, standing under the neon lights with the sounds of revelry pounding like an addictive beat around her, she had never hated anyone more than she did herself. She failed to recognize the weak, defeated, pushover that occupied her body. The only thing keeping her from falling into a hot mess on that dance floor was the realization that she was once again, second best. Second best to the man she'd trusted, she'd...loved. He didn't try to fight for her, for them, didn't call her, didn't attempt any sort of contact and now he here was, acting as if she owed him something.
Soon, her self pity was drying up and before she knew what was happening, her hand flew across the space between them and landed on his right cheek. The shrieks of the bimbos that hung onto his arms and the sound of the slap itself somehow rung across the room, despite the loud music. In a single second, everything came to a standstill.
William's face was dark red, her hand print glowing like a beacon. He was touching his face, feeling around the bruise when she felt Eva walking upto them as they stood there, as if frozen.
Eva with the help of Chris and Vilde, gently pried her away from the spectacle that it was becoming, but before she left, she realized one thing very clearly. And though it was accompanied with unimaginable pain, she knew her mind and heart were finally in agreement and that was definitely a relief.
So shaking herself loose from their hold, she walked up to William, the man she'd given her heart to, the man she'd promised forever to, and looked straight into her weakness: his chocolate brown eyes. But this time, in his eyes she could see the impenetrable walls she'd fought so hard to break down, back up again, harder than ever, and she was once again reminded of the rightness of her decision.
She looked into his eyes and with firm conviction lacing her every syllable, she spoke three words that not only set her free from the battlefield that her body, heart and mind had become, but also started the cleansing process of bringing back to life the old, feisty, Noora.
And those words were,
"I'm done."
