The Contract

Chapter 15

Inside the car, neither Shin nor I said a single word for ages. Reiji was just grinning the whole time like he was making fun of someone and drove. It would be a really long ride, so I leaned against the window and closed my eyes, ready to sleep a little since it was still dark outside, and Shin did the same behind me. For some reason, I sat in the front row instead of him, but I didn't care and Shin, too, obviously. Trees and cars rushed past us. I loved car rides. They were comforting and calming and in the background, there was almost always music.

My phone rang again; a text message from Dante. I sighed and read it.

You okay? I have a feeling something's wrong. Yes, everything was terribly wrong. I had made a bargain with a banned angel to kill Dante, I had slept with Shin and now I was stuck with him inside a car and didn't know how to laugh ever again.

We're ok. It's not that long till we reach Florida anymore.

With that said, I turned off my phone and watched the sun rise slowly above the mountains in the horizon. I liked the night more than the day, but I still thought it was beautiful. Shades of red, orange and pink wavered over the sky, painting the white clouds ivory. Somewhere along the way, I fell asleep.

I opened my eyes just when Reiji was about to say something.

„She's not gonna last long if you take her blood again. You aren't careful enough. I bet her neck still hurts", he said. Shin snorted.

„Take her blood. Sounds like I had stolen it. She wanted me to", he murmured. I blushed instantly and tried to hide that I was awake, but I felt so uncomfortable it was going to be difficult not to let them notice.

„That girl? Wanted you to? When I sucked her blood, I could taste her disgust so clearly it almost covered the taste of blood", Reiji said.

„Well, she was-"

„Don't you dare say that aloud. Particularly not to Reiji", I cut him off, surprising him with being awake. Reiji looked like he had known, but I guess that made sense. Reiji had sharper senses and sat right beside me.

„Say what aloud? Did something happen except for him sucking your blood?", he asked and seemed like he was going to burst with laughter any moment. Like he didn't believe Shin and I were even able to do anything indecent. Well, I had proven him wrong, but I wouldn't ever tell him that.

„As if", I said and shrugged. Less than five minutes later, we reached the ferry. Reiji placed his car on it and we got out to move a bit. Then, we went on the lower deck where they were selling ice cream.

„You need to eat something, but they only have ice cream", Reiji said. I nodded. Ice cream was fine with me since I still ad an head ache and my stomach felt like I was going to vomit again. So Reiji got me ice cream and we three sat down on a table.

„What are we going to do from here?", I asked. Reiji smiled at me. That was weird. He wasn't sarcastic or amused or anything, he actually smiled, like the smile a nice guy gives you when you've dropped something or so. Shin was as shocked as I was at that sight.

„Thanks for asking, I was going to tell you anyways. We're not going to attack immediately since you, Yuki, have yet to become stronger to face this man. He's a beast", he told me. So I still had to wait. But I was okay with that because I knew exactly I wasn't able to win in my present state. I could beat minor to strong demons, but vampires were too dangerous for me. I couldn't even take on Shin who wasn't as strong as Reiji, and Reiji seemed to also fear the man who had once killed me.

„I don't understand why someone so strong would want to kill a fifteen year-old orphan", I said and shook my head, then waited for Reiji to continue.
