I stood up and looked in the mirror. I opened the drawers looking for a hairbrush and found a small cluster of tooth brushes still in the boxes. I had never been so happy to see dentist office rejects in my life. I picked up a bright yellow one and unwrapped it. There were mini tooth pastes pushed in the back. I busied myself with my teeth for almost five whole minutes before looking at my hair. The elastic was so loose it was barely hanging nto the bottom of my hair. There was an awkward bump from leaning against the wall all night.
There was a brush in the drawer on the other side of the sink. I ripped it through my hair, adding some water to try and tame it before giving up and putting it back into a pony tail. After feeling satisfied that this was about as good as it was ever going to get I tucked my toothbrush in my front pocket and picked up the rest of my treasure. I opened the door and walked down the hall and snuck up the stairs avoiding the voices coming from the living room. I darted up the stairs searching for some clothes that didn't make me look like I wasn't wearing pants.
Caleb rounded the corner heading down when I was about half way. He didn't say anything, but I stopped. "Uh," I said when he stared at me expectantly, "I found these. Do you want one?"
"Toothbrush from a pretty girl? How could I refuse." He said with a smirk.
"Hey." Came a voice from right behind my ear. Chase grabbed a red one from my hand and jumped up a few stairs to stand in front of me. "Not that you don't look... cute, in that, but you might want to find some clothes before people start getting up. You look half naked." He said starting to turn around and stopped. "I mean, I could help if--"
"Shut up." I said with a smile that appeared on its own and I tried to suppress. I was NOT falling for his macho bad boy crap.
"Thanks." Caleb said and I handed him all of them.
"Spread them around. There might be more in other bathrooms." I said and continued my assent. Chase put an arm on the banister in my way and I ducked under it. I combed through the rooms for something my taste...or even my size, but until the last room I found nothing. The room at the end of the hall was obviously a teenage girls room. It was pretty, a classic country girl room. The sunset yellow walls were beautiful in the rising the rising sun light.
I flipped through the clothes in her closet. There was a pair of pink ombre shorts with one half of the front a floral design. If this was before I probably would have giggled and squealed over them with y best friends. They looked homemade. I put on a yellow tank and a cute belt that matched. I found gold hoops that went good with the gold charm bracelet Noah got me last year.
Right when I was walking out something caught my eye. It was a heart on a long chain. I crossed the room and took it off her necklace holder. It had a nice design that hinted at floral without flowers and a long chain. There were tiny hinges on one side. I worked it open. Inside was a mom and two girls on one side and then a dad and a son on the other. "Sawyer?" I put it on and jogged into the hall.
Jesse was looking in the room we fell asleep in. "what's up?"
"I was going to put together a small team to scavenge the house in more depth. I think it would be a good idea that we have necessities all in an easily reachable place in case of an emergency. Nice work with the tooth brushes by the way."
"Uh yeah." I said, glad Chase and Caleb had both kept their mouths shut. "I'll get right on it."
He turned to go back down stairs and stopped. "You look nice. I'm impressed with how your taking it all. I wish I could."
"What do you mean? You act like nothings happened. I'm just hiding in the folds of some may be dead girls clothes."
"Trust me." Is all he said before going down to the first floor.
