The reason EJ wears his mask isn't because he's self-conscious about how he looks (he used to be, but after seeing how... Disfigured some other creepypasta are, he got over it), but because he doesn't want people to know what he's feeling.
See, Eyeless is very good at keeping his voice steady when he's upset, but he's not so good at keeping a straight face. But if he wears a mask, no one can see his face, right?
